Montecrist White, a very long night and the cigars we don't like

I would love to know what cigars not only suprise you, but suprise you because you usually do not like them.

Here is my story:

My wonderful wife and I entertained back to back friends the other day.

This is to say that at about 5p.m. a first set of frineds came over for drinks and smokes on the deck; leaving around 9p.m.

Next was the second group of friends who came in at 9:30 and stayed until 2:30a.m.

So just because I am sure some of yo will be curious, here is what we drank: Casa La Postale Cab 05', Stelzner Claret 04' Simi Landslide 03' and later on I drank Knob Creek. Though I drank a lot, I did drink slow and was only slightly above the buzz line most of the time.

So the point of this long winded story is that, to no suprise, I smoked a few sticks that night. Close to 8.
These are not in order of smoke, only because I cannot remember correcctly..

The suprise to me was how great the Monte White was. Aged about 4 years this cigar came alive right at the beginning with a lot of perfect balance cream and slight spice. I had aged them naked and seperated so not to fuse with another brand. Those four naked years found me thinking of, if I had to put a comparrison to it, a warm christmas cookie with nutmeg, a little easy dryness and super easy on the palate.

The Biggest supprise to me was that I smoked this as a "between" smoke smoke (something mild to taste before my Davidoff anni). I am not a Montecristo fan at all, despite my good review. So my question again is:

What cigas do you usually dislike but have found yourself suprised by?

Holy crap, I'd have been hovering over the toilet bowl if I had smoked 8!!

I'm usually not a big fan of the regular 'ole HdM. I pulled one out of the dark depths of my humidor the other night. (Must have had the thing for about 2 years or so. After the yearly "unstock the bar" party at my favorite watering hole.) I found it most tasty. I guess all that time in there with the others musthave mellowed it out and changed it a bit. I was kinda sorry to see it go.

It's funny, but I had the same relationship with the Cuban Montecristos. I smoked them in their bad years (99-02), and decided they were not worth the effort. Years later, in 07, I tried another and was rather impressed.

I don't usually revisit a brand I didn't like, but I was willing to give one of the most famous cigars in the world another chance (just to see if it was me or the cigar who was 'off')

Eight cigars would have had me praying to the porcelain gods. Must've been a blast, enjoying a night with good friends and good sticks.
Hope to have a couple nights like that soon.

I love the Monte white 1st or 2nd smoke of the day, Nice mild _ med flavor. At $8-10 ea not as often as I would like.

I picked up a few Montecristo Media Noche in preparation for the oncoming passes (you have to have good cigars to pass, and I didn't). Anyhow, I smoked a no. 4 right after receiving it, was happy but not blown away. Then I tried an Edmundo today ... and it was incredible. Incredibly constructed, with the ash holding nearly to the band. Great flavor. Nice looking stick too. Highly recommended.

I took my wife, daughter and her girlfriend to the Michigan Renaissances festival last weekend. I have never seen so many strange people in one place at one time. The girls wanted to look at all the crap for sale. I thought, “This is going to be a long day”. Then I located a renaissances style pub with cold beer and a small cigar stand. Not a big selection, a lot of flavored stuff but I located a $3.00 Romeo y Julieta for $7.00. I sent the girls to shop while I sat in the pub. It was like the old days, a lot of people smoking cigars, both men and woman. Not a cigar I would normally buy, but I found I really enjoyed it. My point is that sometimes the time and place play a major roll in how a cigar is perceived.
