Mooch Gars.

I can imagine three categories of folks who I'd give a cigar to.

Catagory one - good friends who know and like cigars. Simple answer - they get the best I have, what I'm smoking, pretty much anything they want. Good 'gars should be shared with good friends who appreciate them.

Catagory two - good friends who aren't into cigars, but want to try one. Probably not the best candidate for the high end, hard to get 'gars you've been aging for a special time, but worthy of a quality smoke. Padron x000's are a favorite cigar to turn "new" folks onto; I have gotten many complements on 2000's with some age on them; they are easy to like. I'd think there are lots of decent bundle smokes that could be had that would be very good choices for folks in this category, for hosts with a budget to keep in mind.

Catagory three - the mooch. I don't have many folks like this due to the "culling" process over the years, but they come around now and then, Usually a friend's undesirable neighbor, brother in law, etc. They can "tell a Cuban from a mile away" and know everything there is to know about cigars. Just ask them...!! They will usually bite the end off, spitting it on the ground when offered the use of a Xikar saying "cutters are for girls". Then, they fire up the 'gar and puff like they are performing CPR on the poor stick. Once the end reaches white hot levels, they give a nice "....ahhh. Great cigar....." comment. There is one and only one gar suitable for folks like this:

....though I wouldn't taint my humidor with 'em. In a bag, in the garage is fine for these..... :sign:

X2!! Especially the Brother inlaw part!! I keep Swishers on hand especially for him, as in his own words "Thats a damn good gar!"

BBS,

I like your categories better than mine. Under mooches there is also one that will light the head and smoke from the foot "because everyone knows cutters are a waste of time". LOL

My God! too many people I know came to mind!

Great topic, I always wondered what to do in this situation. I've given moochers my "good" cigars only to watch them crush them out after a few puffs :angry:
The problem with giving them crapolla is they immediately compare what I've given them to what I'm smoking....and I'm never quite sure what to say.

Newb question (cause I'd prefer not to sift through a million search results right now), what are ISOM and BOTL?

ISOM=Island South of Miami (Cuba)
BOTL= Brother of the Leaf aka fellow cigar afficiando

Thankfully all of my friends don't go in to my humidors and grab anything that they want.
Most of them are casual cigar smokers so I always have a box of Padron 2000 natural or maduros on hand. I'll also give them some Fuente 858 or CAO Gold.
All three are cheap quality smokes.

It depends. I usually talk to them for awhile and see where they are in their cigar experience. I try to make it an enjoyable experience for them. If they are new, I usually give them a mild light cigar, but if they are more mature in their taste I even go with an ISOM. I learned not to waste a cigar on someone who would not enjoy it.

I just want you guys to know that i'm talking about moochers in the purest sense. I'm not talking about friends that enjoy cigars (they get nice cigars without a doubt).

This sums up the people i'm talking about nicely:

Friends of Friends: For example, some of my son's college fraternity brothers. Very nice young men, but usually have no clue about much of anything except getting drunk and chasing girls. These guys get inexpensive mild cigars like JR Special Jamicans or Victor Sinclair. Usually give them the torpedos and keep the coronas for myself.

I really only give out stuff I would smoke myself. Fortunately some of my friends like some of my cheaper stock more than my premiums. Weird I know, but I have a friend who would be just as happy with an El Mejor Espresso, a PAM or a Casa Fuente.

I am willing to share any Premium with my good friends that enjoy cigars and and can taste the quality. To my other non-cigar smoking buddys, I am willing to give anything mid range. I wouldn't give a friend that i could see myself smoking with in the future anything to bad. It's always nice to aquire a new cigar smoking friend, and why not let it be someone you're already good buddys with. However i guess it's all based on how well you know the person.

Edit - will -> willing.

I have a moocher pal, he is just starting out and insists on smoking only ISOM's, claims he has had every cohiba made and can tell the diff's in all of them (ya, give me a break). Well, i tried an experiment one evening he was over, I placed an old Vegas Robina band onto a bundle smoke (yard gar) and handed it to him. His eyes lit up like a kid on Xmas morning, he fired it up, and told me it was the greatest ISOM he had ever smoked :rolleyes:. I would call the experiment a complete success :thumbs:

That is so awesome!

I don't really have any rockets, but I do have better smokes that I don't care for. These usually came from fivers from cbid or other places. Those go to moochers.

A friend who is really interested in cigars, or already has tried a few gets a good cigar that I enjoy.

For friends, I like to give them what I am smoking regardless of what it is.

But, for that very special someone I have a "secret" stash. You know the person I am talking about, the "friend of a friend" who would just as well replace an aged ISOM with a grape white owl in your humi. I keep some unbanded La Finca's and fake cohiba's in a nice, well maintained, faux gold trimmed humi. Everything is a Cubano when it's unbanded.... :sign: :sign: :sign:

If you are good freinds and like the guys, go with there are several you can choose from that don't carry the premium price. Most Oliva's are like $3 a stick, HDM Largo Elegante Maddies are 2.20 a pop, very nutty, I didn't care for them much. You can find rejects usually for like $1 a pop that the faults are really minor. There's a good place to start.

If I had true moochers around, I'd keep some truly nasty cigars around with no labels to give them. El Mago comes to mind. I'll tell them the taste of formaldehyde is straight from Cuba. I think that's the name of those nasty bastards... at least that's what we called 'em.

As for just good cheap cigars that I can hand out, Onyx Reserve and RP 90s Seconds are two good ones that are still cheap. :)

A true mooch walks in, sees the humi and asks for one right off. Anyone else will always be offered something of a strength that won't turn them green.

In the new definition of a mooch, they can kiss the chocolate covered starfish and enjoy it. I make it a special point to have only good people around me and moochers is one thing I will not tolerate in a person. So I don't have any sticks for moochers as I will not let them into my life. I hope that helps you. :thumbs:
