Hey guys,

Had a couple of questions for you guys. Thanks ahead of time for the opinions...

1. I know that one should smoke a cigar anyway they enjoy it, but im curious if my method is common. When I draw, I exhale pretty quickly...the somewhat bitter taste of the actual smoke itself (that semi-bitter sensation on the tongue) sort of leads me to exhale relatively quickly and just enjoy the taste after exhaling. Do you guys ever just let the smoke stay in your mouth?

2. I find, more often than not, that about 30 mins after finishing smoking, I develop a (not-that-pleasurable) aftertaste in my mouth. It typically lasts a few hours. Is this common? Is this pleasurable for most smokers? Any methods for getting rid of it? Im not sure if its just in my nose or in my breath, etc.

3. If wrapped in its single celophane, how long will a cigar last if its not in a humidor?

Welp, thats all I can think of for now. Im sure some of these may seem like silly questions to you long-time smokers. Thanks again. :D

Well, i'm no FOG, but I can try to help you out....

1) The only time i find smoke to be "bitter" is at the very end of some cigars, so I dont exhale quickly, just at my own pace. I usually get big draws so the smoke stays in my mouth for awhile, but i'm not necessarily "letting it" stay in my mouth. (that doesnt asnwer your question..but thats how I smoke)

2) Try brushing your teeth, using mouth wash, chewing gum, or eating peanut butter. All should help get rid of that aftertaste. I personally dont mind it, but its not pleasing either. I usually pop some gum in if i cannot get to my tooth brush.

3) I dont know if there's an exact time frame. A cigar wont "go bad" it will just get dried out and that will hinder your enjoyment of the cigar.

ANyways, i'm just a silly newb...so I hope some FOGs can help you out too.

Total noob here too but I've found that for your first question that if I let the smoke just roll out of my mouth rather than blow it out very fast, you get a much nicer flavor. Also if you leave a little in your mouth and close your mouth and sort of swallow and blow out through your nose, you can get a whole new dimension on the flavor. Search for "smoking through your nose" on the board to learn how to do it.

Again, I'm no FOG either, but you asked for OPINIONS so here is mine:

1) I find that cigars get bitter towards the end....OR, if you smoke them too fast, which will heat up the tobacco near the head of the cigar and effect the taste. I tend to take deep draws with the cigar, trying to get a lot of smoke. Not too fast, and not too slow. I rarely blow the smoke out threw my nose, although many people do.

Side Note: How many of you blow smoke through your nose, and is there a reason why? Does it enhance the flavor profile for you?

2) When around the opposite sex (namely my wife), I will always chew gum, and when that wears off, I will brush my teeth and use mouthwash. That will usually kill the aftertaste, although it always comes back less harsh an hour or two later. It doesn't fully go away until about 12 hours later for me, but that's usually if I don't eat anything. If you brush the teeth, use mouthwash, eat something, and run around naked in traffic, that usually gets rid of the aftertaste.

3) The longer a cigar is left out of a humidor, the more chance it has of drying out. This won't ruin the cigar persay, unless the outside temperature is really dry and it stays out of the humidor for months I would say. I asked this question once before, and the basic answer was this: if they are left out of the humidor in a dry environment for too long, it would be reduced to nothing more than a large, unfiltered cigarette basically. However, if it hasn't been months and months in that environment, you can bring them back by slowly adding humidity to them over many months of time. Adding it too fast could expand the cigar and damage the wrapper.

I think I also read that for a certain amount of time that the cigar is left outside, it takes twice that amount of time in a humid environment to get it back to it's original state. Could be wrong about that but I don't see the harm in practicing it.

Search is your friend...at least 2 of these have been discussed many times before but I'll give you the short answer anyway...

1. I let the smoke hang in my mouth for a moment or two, and exhale slowly and finish with the last half or quarter exhaling through my nose to enhance flavor and enjoyment. Firstly, you might be smoking too fast. Draw once or twice a minute as a rule of thumb. Second, the cigars might be poor quality, too dry or too 'young'. When I buy from a shop, I let them sit at least a week at 65% before I will even touch it. Some brands need to sit 6 months or longer before the bitterness leaves.

2. Citrus/lemon juice etc, or peroxide helps. Some cigars are just nasty and leave that no matter what you do. I had a Cohiba Black that left me wanting to scape my tongue with sandpaper for a whole day.

3. Not long. If your cigar is not in a humi, at least keep it in a air tight ziplok bag. I would get it into a humi within a day or 2...after that it might be too dry to smoke and if left out a week or longer, it may be trash...whether in cello or not.
