Well, I have been smoking cigars with regularity for one month now. Had some good experiences, some not so good. Made a couple mistakes along the way and have learned from them.
My first cigar that got me hooked into a regular smoker was an H. Upmann Cameroon Robusto. Was a gift from a co-worker and friend as we celebrated my final night on the graveyard shift. Till then the only thing I had really tried were the occasional Swisher and the new baby smoke.
The good conversation and nice smoke got my buddy and I into the habit of sharing a smoke every Sunday night when our shifts overlap. In the mean time we have been looking for nice smokes to share on Sunday that will not break the bank. My Friday and Saturday nights have been my sample nights, trying new smokes and finding what ones I like and which ones I really like.
The high lights of my first month have been that first H. Upmann, several Sancho Panzas that came recommended from the Dogwatch Social Club and the local shop, and a Cusano Corojo '97 that the same friend picked up while in Tampa for a cigar event down there.
The low point has been the Carbonell Panetella I picked up at a local shop, mainly because it was the only thing I could find that cost less than 7 bucks. Had I only known......
Other smokes I have sampled have been Baccarat Luchadores , Cibao Robusto, and another smoke the local shop owner gave me because the band fell off and he could not remember where he put the loose band. All were decent smokes that I would not mind trying again.
On the social side of things, the Sunday evening smoke with my friend has been one of the highlights of the week. Online, I have paid visits to several forums as well as the Dogwatch Social Club, which is where I found the link to Cigar Pass. Great group of folks here and by far the most friendly cigar forum I have found.
I have gone from buying a single each day to my own ammo can humidor that is starting to fill up with each passing day.
My biggest mistake was trying to trade too soon. I got in on a newbie pay it forward on another forum and sent a fellow (a more experienced trader) a few smokes from what I had. I warned him that I was new and did not have much, but he gave me a somewhat frank talking to about the quality of some of the smokes I had sent. :0 Guess what I thought was a decent smoke, he considered a dog rocket. A better selection is in route to him to make up for my initial lack of quality. He has been nice about it and did not ask for more smokes, but it did not feel right knowing he was not happy with what I had sent. I will wait till I have built up my selection a bit more before trying that again.
Overall, I have had fun. I am looking foward to what the future may bring. May every smoke be a good one.
