Fuente Opus X xXx

The cigar is more of a mini-belicoso – more corona like in gauge than most of the other beli’s I smoke.

Beautiful presentation. The band and silk wrap are stunning. As I got it ready to light I almost feel like I’m unwrapping a gift. It has a firm body and cap with just a bit of spring at the foot; a pleasant sense of substance. The body is smooth and perfect with no veins larger than a line drawn with a freshly sharpened pencil.

Lighting
It toasted and lit easily and completely. It burns smooth and even with a minimum of smoke. The first few puffs drew very well. Once I had the cigar properly lit, I let it sit for a minute or two.

The first inch
Plenty of rich smoke with some mild woodsy flavor, no real spice. The ash is dense, clean, and almost uniformly pale grey. It shows no sign of wanting to drop. The taste seems…a bit packed – as if the cigar has a lot to say but has jumbled its words and needs a moment to collect itself.

After ashing the first 1.75 inches I am still waiting for the flavor to develop. So far, it isn’t showing me too much. Not bad, certainly, but not amazing either – just a nice, medium strength, creamy-ish smoke without any particularly standout notes. Not what I was expecting although I try to smoke each new cigar without preconceptions.

Again, it’s as if the stick has something to say but is tongue-tied. The flavor still seems “tight”, like a wine that needs more time in the bottle. That may be the case here as I got this in a sampler (from a reputable online retailer) and don’t know its age.

As I move through the middle of the cigar, there is a touch of spice on my tongue but still the overall flavor eludes me. It is still giving me a light cedar but not much else, even with a bit through the nose.

I’m trying to think of what I would compare it to and am coming up blank. It is milder than I thought it would be, burning very nicely, and clearly likes a stately pace – no 20 minute quickie here even though it could almost pass for a Partagas Short or other demi-corona-like stick.

As I enter the final third, I notice a some tar building up in the middle of the cut which I find pretty unusual. The only time I ever see that is on cigars that are drawing poorly and only through one concentrated area which is not the case here. Odd.

I have been smoking mostly Cubans (Montecristo, RASS) and a few medium-ish U.S. import smokes this week so I don’t think I have strained my palate. Plus, this is my first cigar today and still I feel like the flavor is hiding from me. It is still vaguely woodsy, now with some mild nuttiness which is a pleasant addition.

As I smoke it down to fingertip-charring territory, nothing has changed. The nuttiness has turned into a hint of chocolate but really, I feel like this cigar just plain didn't give it up to me. Overall, I'm disappointed. The construction and burn were both outstanding but this cigar was not very flavorful. Frankly, it was a bit of a letdown.

I dunno how the pros rate cigars but I would give this a 9.5 for appearance and construction but, as I found the flavor to be only average, just a 6 for taste. Overall, I don’t think I could go higher than about a 6.5

Bummer :(

I think you should give the cigar a chance again in the future. My experience was quite the contrary, full of flavor.

Thanks for the review.

I have only smoked two Opus and have had mixed results.

First one was a great smoke all around, the last one I had was a big disappointment. Burn issues and a flat flavor.

Like a lot of other people here, I chase the Opus and some of the other HTF Fuente stuff (neither are too prevalent here in the Central VA area B/M's). But my everyday smoke, esp during the winter months is the Padron 1926 #35. You know what you are going to get with every single one of them.

Thx and I hope this isn't considered thread-jacking

Just like most, there was a time when I hunted them down. Several months ago I traded the last of, 35 xxx, Fuente Fuente, and few others.
I stopped liking these cigars. I found that I had to eat before smoking one and for some reason, the taste stopped appealing to me.

However, I still have several of each vitola in tubes, d'Chateau, Royal 8, Forbidden etc. These all have at leat 3 years on them and they smoke great.

Yeah, 30 minutes of smoking time :D

I have to agree, the #35 is consistent but then, the same can be said about all Padron's 1964, 1926. I re-visit them from time to time, there are always a
selection in my humi's.

I like 'em, but 'fresh' Opus aren't great, i like between 1-2 years as the flavors really develop, but it still has 'sizzle', and i have a high tolerance for nicotine, so they don't bother me. Opus and Anejo are my go to smokes, i love the flavor profiles much more than other cigars, so i don't mind investing the time to find them, the hunt is kinda fun.

This is the Opus I prefer as it just has a great flavor profile. I do not smoke any Opus new and prefer to smoke them only after two years in my humidor.

I can smoke the Padron 35 new. It is just smokes great right out of the box. Brian nails it, they are consistent in their taste.

Like others have said re-visit them after they have a few months on them.

Ditto what Brian said. Opus just aren't doing it for me anymore.....in fact only the PL,DC,XXX, and robusto ever did anything for me. I still keep a couple around w/ some age and some special Opus, just 'cause, you know, they're special :whistling:

I am certainly willing to try another but next time I will wait until I can locate one that I know more about, specifically how it has been handled and its age. And my own impatience aside, I am willing to lay one down for a year or more if that is what it needs.

And thanks Doc but believe me...

sinnyc, it's ok to not like opus. There's nothing wrong with you.

Doc.

...there is PLENTY wrong with me (oh so wrong  ) but not liking that Opus, or any other cigar for that matter, doesn't even make me blink.

I have tried other smokes that friends raved about and let them die quietly on the ashtray well before their time and have smoked others that some folks turn their noses up at but that I think are perfectly passable as a reasonably priced smoke. No worries, I am sure I will stumble across more Opus X's in my time. The only reason I haven't tried one until now is that my I never see them in my local shop and I don't like the prices I see online.

Thanks for all of the feedback.
