1-2 feet were predicted for today in Denver. Been there, done that, but I needed to be in the office today for a meeting. So...I filled the tank, took food, water, adequate clothing, the traveldor with 12 cigars, two books, and my notebook with a couple of DVDs. I left just after noon with conditions not so bad. Looking out my office window:
Traffic was thick, then stopped as my wipers began to freeze. As I took the picture, I noticed there was no westbound traffic...uh-oh!
There is the westbound traffic. Still uh oh!
We're in white out conditions. The radio was absolutely no help. The reported that westbound traffic was halted by an overturned bus. Not overturned, but it may as well have been. This is practically no grade, but the bus didn't have the stones to make it up. It slid backwards and blocked both lanes, one shoulder and most of the other. Long SOB. One guy in a 4Runner tried the snow drift on the right and high centered. It must have been full of scholars - they all piled out like clowns at the circus and started shoveling with their hands. In 5 minutes, they broke it loose. Next came a stake truck carrying half a dozen coke machines that went through like there was nothing there.
Turns out that eastbound is similarly blocked by the same make and model of bus on a similarly wimpy grade. It is flanked by DOZENS of rear wheel drive pickups with the names of Mexican states in the rear window. It was dark by then and still in white out, but at least the traffic was moving. Five minutes later, I was ALONE on the freeway for nearly the rest of the way home. Distance: 28 miles Time: 6 hours plus 3 cigars and two chapters in my book. I think I'll stay home tomorrow.
