My brother in law, who is also Diane's God father, is an avid golfer and for Christmas he gifted her a nice starting set and golf lessons.

He picked her up on Friday and brought her back on Saturday. According to Klaus, she is a natural and he was surprised how well she did on her first day.

Diane had a blast! I know a lot of you are golfers and if you have any tips to share feel free to do so.

Diane had so much fun I might even be temped to grab my cob-webbed set out of the cellar and hit the links with them as well.

*edit* to add a few commas

I started learning about that age. My dad and gpa took me out to play a couple par 54 (18 x Par 3's) to learn where to focus my game. After all, you cant hit a 300yd drive at that age.

Then I played for HGJA (Houston Junior Golf Assoc), which was great because I had to learn the PGA rules for every type of situation, hazard, etc.

Other than that, lots of range time. Good luck!

All I'm hoping for is for her to have fun.

And while it is too early to tell, her reaction to the first day is encouraging.

For me golf was always an excuse to go and drink beer and smoke cigars while working on a nice sun-burn during my military days. Other than that I never really got into it.

Golf is a great sport for kids. As long as she is having fun, she will do it forever.

Once she gets a little order, have her read a couple golf books. They really help you understand the game and the sportsmanship that goes along.

That is awesome! I always wished The Kid would have taken the game up, but he's 17 and there's no interest.

There's only two seasons - golf and everything else.

That's great, I'm glad she's enjoying it. My only advice would be to dust off your set. I love the chance to get out and play with my pops. I have some great memories of grandpa dad and I playing golf.

My daughter is a golfer. I don't know where she gets it from. Personally, I don't play any games where the ball is not automatically returned.

Doc.

My only recommendation is to concentrate on the short game. Hitting a driver is over rated...

Sadly my clubs are in storage for a month, it's a shame as this weekend was amazing weather here in Houston for this time of year.

It was! I played Sugar Creek CC on Saturday, lovely weather!

Good to hear that she is enjoying the game. My dad tried to introduce me to golf when I was about your daughters age, but I wanted nothing to do with it. Now I love the game and really enjoy being able to spend time with my dad and the friends that I have made while golfing.

Blow the dust off your clubs and go to the range with her...With what you are saying about her, she will probably kick your ass...

My son loves playing golf. He started when he was 6. I will sometimes take him out with me for a round. It's always a great time and a binding experience wven at this young age. So dust off your clubs and play a round with your daughter.

Lucky man! My kids don't have any interest in the game. But then again, I don't have time to golf either.

When my Father taught us the game, he always started from the pin out. Our first club was a putter, then a pitching wedge, then we spent umteen hours in sand traps and tall grass. I swear, my Dad seemed to have 50 balls in his back pocket...constantly dropping another on the ground and saying.."hit it again and think about that you did on your last shot". Learn the short game...

I guess that also explains why I can't hit a wood worth a sh*t to this day....

Good for her. If she continues with her interest, I would recommend some lessons from a PGA professional. It's easier to learn it correctly right from the start than to "learn" the wrong way, and then have to undo the muscle memory.

I know it's a ways off, but there are many college scholarships available to young women who are talented golfers. Not full rides, necessarily, but something nonetheless. :)

PGA Pro... lol I'm just an average working joe who has to save up for his cigars.

If Klaus pays for it though it its all good.

Call around to the courses/clubs in your area, and ask what how much the pro charges for Junior lessons. It may not be as hateful as you think, as they look at kids as the life-blood of their industry.

Also, some clubs/courses run Junior clinics during the summer. Keep an eye out for those, as they are usually very affordable. There is a driving range in my area that offers a 3-day Junior clinic for $100.

Had her first tourney today... came in third out of twenty kids... both my wife and I are really proud!

*edit* And she is being taught by a pro... here.
