Hey y'all! Just wanted to share my vintage H. Upmann jar I recently purchased from a buddy of mine who has an impressive collection. I date it c. 1950s. I haven't smoked any of them but they still have some give when I put a little pressure on them. The wrappers are still smooth but not like on a newer cigar. I got a pretty nice deal on them and I will attempt to slowly bring them back to life. Enjoy some cigar porn. That. Is. Awesome.
Nice score. Even if they need a bit of rehab.

I have no experience with cigars of this age. When you say "attempt to slowly bring them back to life" are you saying that he didn't store them correctly?

Good luck, those should have a story with them as well.

Im going to slowly introduce them to the proper humidity and temperatures. They have been in a cabinet for over 20 years but who knows before that.

What's the story? Where did he get these? If he's had them for 20 years, were they for collecting purposes only?

He got them in the late 90s, but hasn't really touched them since, apparently he bought them off an other cigar collector who had a rather large pre embargo collection.

Great collectable, nice score. Wish I felt more optimistic on the cigars. Simple fact is that if the cigars are allowed to really dry out, even once, the oils in the tobacco will crystallize out and that's pretty much that. Sure, given time you can re-moisten the tobacco but it will never be the same and they will never smoke the same again.

You made the investment, nothing to lose at this point so what the heck. Good luck.

I agree, chances are that the cigars themselves do not taste good. There's just no bringing them back if they weren't stored properly for a decade or even more in this case.

But the purchase is still interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks! Yeah I didn't spend too much on it. I'm going to let them slowly come back to life, they don't feel too dry but you never know. I'll try one and let y'all know how it smokes. I couldn't let a vintage jat of H. Upmanns go because I know I'd regret it.

Depending on the price, I completely agree. The jar is cool as hell...

If your friend bought them off a pre-embargo collector himself as you stated and kept them in a cabinet humidor there's a pretty good chance these have been properly stored. Since you say he had them in a cabinet since the 90's, is this a cabinet humidor or a cabinet with no humidity control? If it was a cabinet humidor why would you need to bring the humidity up unless he kept them lower then you prefer but if that's the case you will need to be very careful and bring the humidity up slowly so you don't crack the wrappers and damage the cigars to the point they are unsmokeable.

Very cool find either way and best of luck with them.
