Need some advise

Welders one of the most sougt after "blue collar" positions right now. It takes only a few months to become certified via a good welding program. The one thing having experience in a trade does for someone, is guarantee a skill that can be used anywhere. So, whichever path he chooses, it should be something he enjoys. If he's not very smart, tell him plumbing. All they need to learn is that sh*t runs downhill and payday is on friday. (tradesman joke, not to be meant as an insult).

Oh he could find something in the porn business. Millions of dollars to be made!

Crane operator. Or, get a CDL and drive truck.

If he's not scared of heights then a lineman/electrician is a good way to go.

Ironworkers make lots of money but most of them are crazy and ya can't do that work much past your mid forties.

I dunno about the welding thing, I know lots of old welders who are damn near blind.

Oh and wasy, you're looking for "advice" not "advise." ;)

I'm a college student myself, and although I'm not father nor do I have the experience in life that you have with dealing with a child, but I would strongly encourage your son to go to college. Even if its just a community college for 2 years he can get his associates. Statistically, any college over no college will earn you more money in life so even if its just that, that would be his best route.

I have been reading the thread...around here...trades that really are in demand are A/C, plumbing, welding, pipe fitting....it's like what others were saying...a trade that can be used ANYWHERE...i will say this...working in the trucking industry...i say this in what i saw CC say..stay away from trucking...it is HARD work and what you make, even if you think you work hard? The deductions that ANY trucking company takes out...can really take its toll...but in the end, as what everyone else has said..is do what makes you happy...cause if you end up doing something to pay the bills but you are miserable? You will be that...miserable and hating life everyday...I do hope that your son decides what is best for him...make sure he knows you are behind his decisions...while constantly pushing him...and he will be fine :)

Interesting take on the whole trucking thing. I think that in some cases, it can be okay like if you own your own rig or your own small trucking company AND can get good "gigs" like some of my friends have done. Like any line of work, there are some great opportunities out there, it's usually a matter of getting lucky though.

You would think with all the kids I have that I could give you some advice, but I really can't. Most of the posts have great ideas of which I cannot add a whole lot. One thing I can say that I think is important is to love him and let him know you love him as he finds his way. It sounds silly, but I think the real key to success in this world, the key to happiness is knowing that you have someone back there who loves you no matter know long it takes to find your way and figure out what you have to do. If you love him and he knows you love him he will be able to fly. I hope my two cents makes sense. Good luck and know that things will work out.

Guys, I greatly apprecaite the candor and advice. My son a really a great kid and never been into any trouble he simply struggles through school, always has. It's tough sitting back and watching him make poor decisions but I guess it's the way to becoming a man and making better decisions in the future.

One thing I'd like to point out is that you don't neccessarily have to go to a University to go to college. I went to a Tech School up in Iowa for Manufacturing Engineering Technology and I currently have a great job with a great company. I do 3D CAD Design mainly, and I do stuff with that program that most of our Degreed Engineers don't have a clue about.

Its important to learn some sort of trade. There just aren't that many jobs out there for unskilled labor. At least none that really pay well.
