We have a digital cable box, surround sound (has separate tuner), and plasma tv. I'm trying to hook the dvd up, but not sure where i need to plug the component cables into, and do i need a digital coaxial cable, and do i need to use the red and white audio, and if so, where do they plug into?

thanks
frank

Plug yellow video into Plasma and plug red/white audio into surround sound receiver. Unless you're feeding an audio out from the TV back to your surround sound, then everything can go directly to the TV.

Just a guess, though, without being there. :)

Did I win?

If it is a new upscaling DVD player you want to use HDMI to the TV. This will give you sound and picture using the TV speakers. If your Surround Sound receiver has a digital input for the DVD you would want to connect that up so you can play the DVD surround sound when you want. Even if you didn't want to use the TV speakers I would still use the HDMI connection to the TV because it will allow upscaling and is a digital connection.

I paid one of the techs $20.00 to come out after work and do it when I bought my receiver, that's after I had spent a couple hrs trying to do it myself and ended up with a B/W picture and sound coming out of only the center speaker. Took him 15 minutes.

Good luck!

you will not obtain true surround sound (Dolby 5.1 or 6.1) if you don't use digital plugs starting at the receiver, then going to the tuner audio in. Sometimes these are hidden square plugs (on my sat receiver anyways). After your audio signal goes to the tuner, the tuner should be good for sound. For picture, I use the S-video style plug, or optical for the video for better quality picture.

RCA cables will work for stereo sound but that;s about it, (also, you need an HD capable receiver (satalite receiver) to get the HD picture, alot of people forget that!). I don't know what cable viewers do, we live in the boonies, and dont even have dial up!

happy viewing :)

If you are going to use an optical or digital coax cable for 5.1 surround sound, make sure you remember what digital input you are using when make the dvd connection. This will make it easier finding your sound when you turn on your A/V reciever, on the back of a few recievers, manufacturers will label their inputs using numbers instead of actual component names(dvd,dtv/sat). You also may need to assign the input on your hometheater reciever i.e. digital input 1 assign the name over to dvd and for digital input 2 assign it for dtv/sat. You might need to change the aspect ratio of your dvd player from 4x3 to 16x9 and select progressive scan for your video output if you do not have an up-converting dvd player.

i plugged the digital cable from the dvd into the tuner, and now surround sound works. I guess i can't use the tv speakers along w/ the surround sound, there is somewhat of an echo, so i turned the tv volume down all the way.
