Since I am just getting my new humidor set up I figured I would ask you guys some questions.

First what cigars do you recommend for this newbie? I have been told Arturo Fuente Curly Heads, Macanudos, and Acid Kuba Kuba. If I cant keep that Acid in the box with any others I buy then I am not getting it.

Second, I plan on buying my first box online and was wondering where you guys get them? I have looked on jrcigars and they seem to have decent prices but then again I am a newbie.

Thanks

Welcome to CP, Bill. Pass on the online buy for the moment. Visit your closest cigar shop, even it it's a bit of a trip. Tell the proprietor that you are new to cigars. If he is any good, he can ask you a few questions and provide you with a sampler to get you started.

Once you have even a few cigars that you've enjoyed, go back to JR and the multitude of online vendors and make more choices.

Anyone from Michigan that lives west of Detroit. (Livonia area) that knows of a decent cigar shop. There are a ton of smoke shops around here but is one decent?

As a fellow newbie, first let me say welcome to the hobby/lifestyle. Second I would tell you that whomever told you to buy anything in the Acid line is not really your friend. :D

My first question to you is what type of smoke are you looking for? I know personally I am still working my way through mild to medium smokes. If this is the case for you as well, I have a few suggestions from my own experience, as will many others on here. Some of the better mild - medium, price effective smokes I have tried so far are: Cusano 18 Double Connecticut, Rocky Patel Connecticut, 5 Vegas Gold, Padron 2000, Cusano Corojo 1997, and Romeo Y Julieta Reserva Real. Most of these cigars can be had for $5 or less. Another friendly suggestion for you to consider, before you jump in and buy a box of something that you may not end up liking, is to buy a couple of samplers. You usually get 2-3 of each stick in the sampler, and you can figure out what you like without committing to 25 sticks of one type. I know that Cigarbid.com usually has 5 packs or samplers you can get a reasonable prices, or you can check out JR's, Cigar International, and I'm sure other people can make other suggestions for you.

All of this is just my opinion of course.

Don't buy boxes yet. Your taste will evolve very quickly and you will find boxes just sitting in your humidor. Just start by buying 1 of a lot of different sticks. Get a grasp of what you like and keep trying. Look for lines like:

Macanudo
Don Pepin (blue label)
CAO
La Aroma de Cuba
La Gloria Cubana
Punch
Olivia

They will give you a good bases to start off your taste buds. However, be expected not to like all of them. You won't figure out what you like if you don't try some you don't like. As I'm still going through the phase of buying single cigars to find ones I really like, I keep of list of ones I've liked and disliked for future reference.

As time goes on, you'll figure out what you truly like. That is when you start buying boxes.

I've gotta agree with all the other BOTLs who are telling you to NOT, I repeat, DO NOT BUY A BOX of a cigars you've only smoke 1 or 2 or 5 or even 10 times. You smoke that many of them and like them? Good, buy one more and leave it in your humi.

Try some others, TALK to people, read the Cigar Reviews sections, and if you smoke 10-15 more DIFFERENT brands in bewteen, go back to that first cigar you loved. If you make it through and you STILL have a thing for it, then by all means...buy a box.

Don't do what I did. I bought a box of ACID 1400CCs that I just got in, and I HATE THEM now. I regret spending MONEY on ACID. One of the first local shops I went to started me on Kahluas, CAO flavoreds, and ACIDS. Now, I have two Kahluas I bought in a sampler that have SAT in my humi taking up space, I threw out two CAO flavoreds, and I have this ACID box I might get rid of today. I called that same shop and asked if they would buy it back from me, so ::crosses fingers!::

Go to a CIGAR SHOP, not a "head shop" and talk to the owner. Or, go online and check out some samplers. And lastly, once again, READ THE REVIEW SECTION. That can give you some ballpark factors to take in when getting cigars.

Otherwise, they're just taking up space in your humidor.

As these guys have already given you a good list to try out, I will refrain from doing so. But. I'm a huge proponent of Punch cigars, havent tried one that I didnt like, and for the price, you cant beat em.

Also, try out some sun growns, the Patel Sungrown, Olivia Serie O, Ashton VSG. I'm currently infatuated with sun growns.

What he said. Newb trades are awesome, the FOG's somehow know what you'll like!
also look into setting up a "coolidor" to catch the overflow from your humidor, as if you are like me, you will LOVE to shop for cigars even tho your humi is full.

I'm going to echo their sentiments and suggest you start with the newbie sampler trade. You'll likely get more for your money that way and it's less of a gamble IMHO, because the guys here know their stuff. You could get a clerk at the store who is badly misinformed.

Thanks guys.

I think once I get a little more cash and my humi is ready I will be going on the Newbie trade forum. Hopefully who ever I work with can give me a decent selection.

I would befriend your local cigar store and support him. Sometimes you will get a freebie, and if he is anything like my B&M owner he will let you smoke in his shop and give you some coffee to boot.

Lots of good information here especially about the NEWBIE TRADE but the main question is your budget! Does your wallet hurt if you buy a cigar that costs more than $7? Can you spend $250 on a box without batting an eye? These are very valid questions because in order to find cigars that are good for you, your budget needs to be considered. Also, how often do you smoke? If you only smoke twice a week then the $10 cigars may be okay for you, then again if you smoke twice a day this could be bad! :D

Some great cigars for great prices to start with:

-Perdomo Lot 23 (I highly recommend the the maduro but the natural is good too)
-Trilogy Exotic Maduro/Native Cameroon/Authentic Corojo (Excellent stick for the price, I smoke at least one of the Exotic Maduros a day, very medium for the darkness of the wrapper)
-Fuente Sungrowns (Slightly more expensive than the above but damn good!)

More expensive:

-Padron 1000 Series (These just plain rock your socks off.)
-Fuente Hemingways (Excellent example of how a cameroon wrapper should be used.)
-Rocky Patel Vintage (I recommend the 1992, but try the 1990 as well.)

Oh, and Acid cigars suck :p
