New Humi - Quick Question on Hygrometer Calibration

Hi All,

I am new to Cigar Pass as of about 5 minutes ago but after reading through a few of the posts I had to sign-up. Anyway, my girlfriend just bought me a new humidor for Christmas and it is my first. I have had some in the past but they were owned by my father and uncle so I never had to calibrate and set up.

At this moment, I am working on setting up the actual humidifier. I submerged in water last night, put it back in, and sat a sponge in over night. Earlier this afternoon, I took the sponge out as directed and I am closing it up for another 12-24 hours. My question is while I am waiting for this next round of time to pass, can I go ahead and calibrate my hygrometer or do I need to wait until this time passes? I'd like to get it calibrated so I can get my cigars in right away but I don't want to mess anything up either.

Any insight is much appreciated and I am looking forward to becoming more ingrained in this community.

Hope everyone has a great New Year.

Joseph

You can do both at the same time. Might I also suggest you 1. check out the salt test sticky at the top of the Humidor forum OR get a calibration pack 2. you may want to upgrade to gel or beads for your humidification.

As I do understand your hurry to get your cigars in your humidor....TAKE YOUR TIME with seasoning. If you rush it you could end up drying out your sticks.
Store your cigars in a ziploc or tupperware container with some sort of humidification device while you get things underway.

Yep...what bigman said...patience is key. Get on Heartfelt's site and get a couple good adjustable hygros and some beads. Buy a bunch. David's a good dude and you'll want more anyway after you're here a while. Take your time and do this right and your sticks will love you for it. Feel free to PM me for offline questions. I'm not the guru around here, but learned quickly from the Masters.

Oh, and welcome!
