I just had a 2002 Cake Bread Chardonnay the other night that was showing very well. As far as the DeRose goes, they are one of my favorite producers. Pat and Al DeRose are making some big wines and almost all of their fruit is coming from dry-farmed old vines. I'm not much of a Merlot drinker and I don't recall trying it at the release party last month. If you like big reds, check out the DeRose Negrette :D , my favorite daily drinking wine.

I have about 6 bottles of 2000 Cake Bread that I lliked very much. Probably should drink them soon.

golfgar, I sure hope your storeing that 2000 properly :p . I love a good Chardonnay with some age on it, you'ld be surprised.

Ree, I have a few bottles of the DeRose '97, '99 and 2002 Negrette sitting comfortably in the cellar, if you make it out to San Jose we'll open a bottle with our cigars. If you end up enjoying the Negrette check out the DeRose Hollywood Red and Dry-Farmed Old-Vine Zinfandel as well.

I would have to go with the 2003 vintage being better for the DeRose, but the cost difference is probably just inflation. Like cigars, there are differences between a young wine and aged wines. But that is a whole other topic ..... :p
