New York Egg Cream

Received the package of UBet, thanks drunkfish! :) Also, thanks a lot for the hitch hikers, very kind of you. ;)

I'll make some carbonated water today or tomorrow and report back. Can't wait to give this a try!  Thanks again.

I'm truly interested in seeing if you think the Fox's is noticeably better than what you previously used.

Coke, Pepsi, etc. killed the Eggcream. They used to use the old fashioned refillable seltzer bottles with the metal valve tops to make them.

I remember drinking them and they used to be layered in flavor. Poke the straw to the bottom of the glass and you got thick chocolate flavor...bring the straw up and it was a mixture of both...if you sipped it off the top, it was like a lightly flavored chocolate soda that worked nicely on HOT Summer day. It was a flavor experience in a glass!

I was traveling one time (Chevy Chase, MD) and saw an eggcream on the menu in a pseudo-hippie coffee house. To make it, they used fat free, sugar free chocolate syrup, salt free seltzer, and almond milk....are you f*cking kidding me?

Hell yeah! I've had hundreds, if not many more. I now make them for my son. It is the same as an Italian Cream Soda.
The recipes on the web suck. Add some Vanilla syrup or extract too.

Yeah, Gary. Folks are saying that they are not the same anymore and by my estimate, it is because the recipe is compromised. Years ago, I can't remember one time when the soda jerk didn't pump vanilla syrup into the glass. Also, the milk today sucks. Buy a half gallon of Organic Valley Whole Milk (the absolute best milk I have found, by far), Torani Vanilla Syrup, and it will be a lot better, imho.

I can't believe you just mentioned the Torani syrup...I was headed to the restaurant supply place today to pick up a few flavors. I use them mostly for flavored cappuccinos. Gotta try it in an eggcream. Thanks for the tip, I'll grab a Vanilla one too!

I can remember egg cream as a small boy. Some people would use vanilla malt syrup also. I never had it made with this.
If anyone has some of the vanilla malt, it would be interesting to see if it is as good as the chocolate egg cream.

I never had a vanilla malt in mine. It's basically a matter of preference, I guess, but think about baking, artisan chocolate, etc. Vanilla id often used. It adds a complexity which to me, is what gave the Egg Creams made in that fashion that layered flavor. They are never stirred like mad. Just enough to get a halfway decent mix.

Gary! Yes, in my quest to determine the best, easier to get Syrups, I've determined that I like Torani the most.

We're blessed here in the Northeast. We got plenty of Jews and Italians. The rest of our country, I feel for ya.
