In addition to cigars I would probably have to say movies are high on mylist of the greatest things in the world. As an aspiring actor and a guy who's just always looking for good cinema I was wondering if anyone has seen any good movies, some people may have overlooked in the mainstream, released in the past say... I don't know.. make it 5 years? Looking forward to maybe renting a few of the suggested ones.

"The 300" - Awesome! Although it is still in the theatres. Recently rented "The Departed" also very good.

There are no outstanding, recently released films.

Doc.

Just saw Children of Men - biggest pile of crap I've seen in a while.

Good luck with the acting career, and if you want to make it - turn down anything that Ewe Boll is involved with!

Saw TMNT with the kids and I must say I enjoyed it.

haha no no i agree I should have said decent movies.

Igwana i haven't seen it yet but I heard Children of Men was amazing why didn't you like it?!

Movies on DVD to check out would be Departed, Casino Royale and Serenity (get the firefly episdoes on DVD if you like it).

As for the 300, the only way to watch it is on iMAX. Everything else is uncivilized.

Basically, it sucked. The way it was filmed was cool - too bad the rest of it wasn't even worth mentioning because you've probably seen it a hundred times before in much better productions. (in one of the promos they claim the main character is something different from the usual - he's a hero that doesn't want to be a hero - that should be a clue as to the movie's suckitude)

The movie (Serenity) was good too ;)

Casino Royale just out on DVD is definitely worth a watch. One of the best action flicks in a while and probably the best Bond movie ever. That's saying a lot too. The movie doesn't focus on gadgets and bond girls but on great story and excellent action footage. There is one sequence that is guaranteed to make every guy cringe. If you've seen it, you know what I'm talking about.

Great flick!! Highly recommended.

Film is subjective. Your definition of an outstanding or even a good film will, and should differ from everyone else’s opinion to a certain extent.

I studied film fairly seriously and went to the beginning by watching silent films like “The Birth of a Nation”, “Metropolis”, “The Passion of Joan of Arc”, “Greed”, “Nosferatu”. Then I watched films by directors I respected and I began to realize that there wouldn’t have been a Clint Eastwood or a “Spaghetti Western” without John Ford directing John Wayne and creating an ideal of not what America was, but what America could be. I noticed the same historical relationship with Fellini and Scorsese and so many other directors and actors.

You’re going to have to establish your own film aesthetic based upon your taste. There’s no set list of films, there may one day be a canon of great films taught to people, but you should strive to develop one based upon your aesthetic.

This site,Not coming to a theater near you has reviews of films you may not have seen. It could be a good starting point if you’re interested in films that slipped through the cracks.

Concur whole-heartedly...

Some non-mainstream films I've enjoyed (but not necessarily in the last five years - although recent in movie standards...

SLC Punk (6 stars on the 1-5 scale)
Momento
The Man Who Wasn't There
Donnie Darko
Clue
Brazil

I'll post more as I think of them...

Those movies were all great, I'd add in Seven and Requiem for a Dream also even though they are older films.

This movie is subjective as hell - "Manos the Hands of Fate"

Then again I watch Mystery Science Theatre 3000 for fun :)

Casino Royale......I have heard it was the best Bond movie yet......I think it is the worst Bond movie yet......it is not a Bond movie!

The Texas hold-em is game a joke, and it is the key event in the movie:

1...They are supposedly good players and make every mistake in the book.
2...The chip values don’t add up to the bets they make
3...Bond figures out the other guy’s tells in one hand
4...They go all in and shove all their money out in the middle of the table
5...They play for hours and end up having the exact same amount of money on the last hand.
6...There is a total of $92,000,000 bet on the last hand and the hand is worth $150,000,000
7...The bad guy notices that Bond changes his shirt during a break but doesn’t notice that his hands and knuckles are battered and bloody…..in a poker game yet.

It is an okay movie but it is not a Bond movie:

1....In Bond movies Bond is ultimately sociable and the best of the best, is this movie Bond is unsociable and considered a liability by MI6
2...In Bond movies the stunts are comically far fetched, in this movie the stunts are just far fetched but portrayed as real
3...Bond falls in love which is not allowed in a Bond movie
4...Bond wakes up from cardiac arrest feeling chipper as a jay-bird

Not that impressed

THE PRESTIGE.

Great movie. Then again, I like illusion and magic.

I have to concur. I figured out the "secret" pretty early on, but I still liked it. Then again, I'm a pretty big Christian Bale fan. "The Machinist" was amazing, particluarly what he did for that role.

Plus, as for "The Prestige" any flick with David Bowie is alright by me...esp. if he is playing Nikola Tesla.

300 was great...A few others I have seen but some would think they werent that great...(gotta love that type of thing)...Grindhouse, Aqua Teen the movie, Saw 3....Serenity, if you love the Firefly series is GREAT....Joss Whedon is the man. I am currently his Buffy, Season * comic. I have many favs that I could watch any time but I will bore most of you ;-)
