Thinking of adding more life insurance in the not too distant future. Can anyone tell me how long does nicotine stay in your system? How sensitive and specific are the test use when buying life insurance policy? How long would I abstain? I would prefer authoritative replies rather than annecdotes. If you can provide links, even better. Thank you very much!

My life insurance agent told me that having a cigar from time to time wouldn't affect my premiums at all. Said "That doesn't count"

According to my life Ins. agent, two weeks. However just to be sure I abstained for about 3-4 before my blood work/urinalysis.

Same here. I got a preferred rate through Prudential and honestly admitted smoking several cigars a week. Might pay to shop around a bit.....

I'm no expert, but what if you get a policy based on being "nicotine free" and when it comes time to collect, it's found you weren't 100% honest? With my luck, if there's something they could jack your beneficiaries around with, they would.

Good Luck - B.B.S.

It's a tricky scenario for sure. The insurance could, and most likely would, attempt to not pay on the policy. However they have to be able to prove that at the time the policy was taken out the insured falsified information on the application regarding smoking. That's why it's important for cigar smokers to be upfront with your agent about smoking cigars (maybe not about the quantity though) to see who he can get insurance through that does not rate cigar smokers poorly. For example my life policy through Northwestern Mutual is fully aware that I smoke cigars occasionally, however as long as I had a nicotine free screen I would get the same rates as a non-smoker.

Be aware! There is a national database that all insurance companies report to, so if you lie on your application and get caught it goes on record, so every time after that when you try for life insurance it will come up.

You also need to find out what kind of test they are giving you. Mine I just had to swab the inside of my mouth.

My insurance agent (my mother-in-law) just shows up at my place one day and tells me I need to do the test to get the paperwork in and done. A little notice would have been nice. Two days before I had smoked a cigar while BBQing. Fortunately, nothing came up.

My agent said I had no problem with the cigars. It's the flying thing that bankrupts me.
