When I got home from the grocery last night, I opened the door to get out. I leaned over into the passenger side to gather up a few bags when I felt the impact.

Some stupid penis leech knocked my door ajar and drove off. (I curse every little red car that has damage to their front passenger side headlight) Filed a police report, but I consider that to be paperwork housekeeping, and cant realistically expect results.

There is no way to shut the door anymore. Two body shops today estimated $1200-1500 as the frame is mangled.

Now granted it is an ugly little 1991 Geo Storm, but it was mechanically sound and still averaged 26 mpg. I just figured these numbers make it unfeasible to repair.

LOL that is a new one for me. Sorry to hear about the car but it sounds like you got every mile out of it that you could.

You might consider taking the old but well loved ride to a nearby community college that teaches body and fender repair, and offering your car for training purposes. You just might get the rig back in serviceable shape, at a reasonable price.

Hard to let older reliable cars go; my 1992 VW Jetta with 205K on it went to a good buddy of mine and now has about 290k on it....

Take care - B.B.S.

That sucks, man. There aren't many better ways to save cash than to be driving a car that runs well and is worth absolutely nothing (no slight intended). I hope you are able to find an equally cheap ride to replace it!

Bonus: Since I'm a lawyer, I'll relate the lawyer joke this reminds me of:

A lawyer parallel-parks his brand new BMW on the road and opens the door to get out when some jackass drives by and rips the door right off. A cop happens to see this, so he pulls up behind the lawyer. As the cop approaches, the lawyer launches into a tirade about how that idiot ruined his brand new $60,000.00 car. Just look at the damage, it'll cost a fortune to fix. And it'll never be as good as new. The beautiful car is just ruined. He just goes on and on. Finally, the cop interrupts and says "You damn lawyers are so materialistic. You're so upset about your car that you haven't even noticed that your left arm was torn off with the door!" The lawyer looks at the bleeding stump where his arm used to be and exclaims: "My Rolex!"

Bunch of savages!

I lost my first car about the same way as you lost this one. B.B.S. has given sound advice. I've heard of others doing that and one fella I know actually got his car repaired by a local high school gratis. It wasn't quite as extensive of a repair, but free is free. The students did good work, too.

Good luck to you...

174,000, that's just barely broken in!

The car I'm driving now has 186,000, and my other driver has 320,000. My BMW has 220,000 and the "show" car has 180,000.

You never know, you just may wind up finding out who hit your car, I hope you do. ;)

Everytime I read those figures Bill, I'm absolutely amazed.

And yep...I hope you find the no good SOB who wrecked your car Robbmt.

Excellent advice.

No. It is going to the kidney foundation. They can do as they please. I still have my pathfinder but am going to look for another little beater car that is good on mpg.
