Hey guys wats up? new to the whole cigar smoking hobby and Im wondering whats a good cigar to purchase and smoke occasionally. Im on a budget, guess you can say a budget smoker...lol.... Ive gone down to this corner store by my house that has a whole display of cigars that u open up and pick out. I guess prices range from 1 dollar to 10.00 Im guessing. Im not really lookin for a 1.00 dolla cigar though..I would like something good to smoke as I wont be doing it often. I dont know the names of them cause Im new to this...but I was wondering if you could provide me with names I should look for for a good smoke? Also any tips on how to smoke a cigar? Do I always cut the end? etc. any tips or a link to info for first timer smokers would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. Im a big Soprano fan and I noticed they have limited edition cigars you can purchase that tony smoked....they are hard to get I guess now..but anything comparable to them?

Thanks for the help in advance guys!

Best advice ever given to me: "Smoke what you like, and you'll like what you smoke."

Using the search engine on the site can be a little rough, but try it out and I'm sure you'll find some answers to your other questions.

PS- Why "Gotti Jr?" :p

Most cigar stores have products by Arturo Fuente. Check for cigars from the Arturo Fuente Hemingway line. That's a pretty good place to start. And they're pretty easy to find.

My nod would go to Davidoff Thousand Series, Avo #9, or Montecristo Classic/White.
They're all deliciously mild and flavorful. Excellent starter cigars.

One of the best ways to learn more about cigars and smoking (other than this site of ourse) is to go and hang out at your local shop. There is not better resource for the cigar smoker than a good relationship with a local tobacconist.

Here are a few names to look for:

Arturo Fuente
Montecristo
La Gloria Cubana
La Flor Dominicana
Padron

Most of these brands will have high dollar cigars as well as those priced for the budget smoker. I would also suggest that you constantly try new things and go back to ones you have tried in the past because your tastes will change.

Happy Smoking

Arturo Fuente Hemingway, any size. The first cigar I ever smoked, and still a favorite.

Cusano 18 is a great value cigar around $5, in both the Maduro and Connecticut Shade versions.

Thanks for saying this.

Absolutely, go find your local cigar shop.

Another thing to look for is if they are a member of the IPCPR, the respected industry trade association for premium tobacconists. There are a few members who are liquor stores or convenience stores, but for the most part, the shops are legitimate Brick and Mortar tobacconists.

Here's a great list of member tobacconists from the IPCPR:

A good starting smoke that I like is the Gispert. Its a mild-medium smoke and has a pretty good flavor. I'm a huge sopranos fan too, and those are great smokes, but I'd try some lighter stuff before starting off with the boss one.

The first cigar I really loved was the Punch Rare Corojo. You can find them in a lot of shops, but not all. Mild smoke but in my experience good construction and tasty.

These days it's a little too far on the mild side for me but I always keep one in the humi.

Davidoff and AVO (from the same manufacturer I believe) make some of the best and most flavorful mild smokes in my opinion.... but they don't come cheap. One of my favorite milds now is the Davidoff Anniversario No. 3, but it goes for something like $16. The Avo XO is also excellent and similar in flavor and goes for closet to 9 or 10 I think.

Wow! Thanks for responses guys! Appreciate the info. I wrote this stuff down and I'll be on the hunt for the suggestions given. Thanks.

couple other questions. ... how long do cigars last in a humidor. I was planning on getting a inexpensive one off ebay or amazon. Are the carry humidors any good?

Also do you always cut the ends of a cigar? if so how much off?

Sorry if these questions seem funny but Im learning.

Another great way to try some good cigars to see what you like is to do a Newbie Sampler Trade (linky)

A lot of folks (including myself) have had good luck with cheaphumidors.com for a decent inexpensive humidor, especially in their "imperfects" section.

Most of your other questions are pretty standard, a quick search will give you tons of posts with info. You can also check out http://www.cigargroup.com/faq/ for some basic FAQs.

Definitely head over to the Introduction forum and tell us a little about yourself as well. Welcome to CP.

Just go your local B&M and buy any cigar in the price range you want to spend, but by a couple different brands for about the same price and somke'm. do that for awhile and you will learn what you like and you won't go broke.
