I'm currently in the first steps of discussing a job opportunity in Greensboro? What is the area like and he surrounding area. The cost of living looks to be cheaper than here in NJ. What would be a good salary for someone that wants to be upper middle class?

Thanks for any help.

DG

I haven't lived there since the mid-80s, so it's probably changed a lot. But I loved it while I was there. The western part of the state is even better, IMO.

Good luck with the job opportunity!

I've never lived there myself but I have a good friend that live in charlotte for a few year’s and he loved it. I believe the cost of living was a bit less then WI, I’m not how that compares to NJ. Best of luck with the Job if you take it.

In general, you'll need to make about 12% less in NC to have the equal lifestyle of NJ. There are plenty of salary calculators that can be more specific which you can google.

DG:

I lived in Charlotte for 3 years prior to coming to Princeton NJ. It is obviously much more affordable down there. Greensboro is a great location to get to Raleigh and Charlotte. Decent size city as well. Traffic is a little tricky because of 85 and 40 merging, but nothing compared to a big city.

The Mountains are a few hours away, and the beaches are a few more. Greatest state because you have the beautiful mtns and the wonderful beaches in a short trip.

Also if you are looking for deals on Furniture you are right by the furniture capital of the world (Hickory and Thomasville, NC). You are close to the Concord NASCAR track (no laughing). Winston-Salem is nearby with fun ACC games to go to. Anyway-I love NC, hate NJ, so I am excited for you.

As for money, I won't be much help because I work(ed) in the church, so I was on the lower end of the payscale and am now a full time student in NJ.

Housing will be very affordable. NJ (I am in the Princeton area) is ridiculous and absurd. You could get an awesome place for half the money in NJ.

Diesel-
I live in Charlotte and work with a number of colleagues from Greensboro and Winston-Salem. If you have specific questions, send me a PM and I'll be happy to track down an answer, or put you in touch with someone directly.

I moved down here from Ohio 10 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did.

Greensboro...I live in Greensboro.

Its a really nice area. It does take some getting used to. Hard to explain, but people around here just don't seem to be as "excitable" as other places I've been. Its really laid back, and the weather is great. NOt too hot in the summer, and not too cold in the winter. There are quite a few decent restaurants in the area, and if you're a beer drinker the local brew is GREAT. Red Oak

As for salary to be middle class. 40-50k a year should do just fine. But that's really just a guess.

If you do move here, hit me up and we'll have some bbq and smokes this summer.

If you have any questions, just ask.

The company is Ralph Lauren which has it's world headquarters there. Now nothing has gone past the basics but some other opportunities are coming up for the NC area too.

The wife isn't so crazy about the idea of moving away from our parents but I'm tied of NJ and working two jobs. I have two little kids that haven't start school yet so now is a good time for us to think about this and maybe do it.

I make a good bit over the 50K and the bump of a new job would be a good bit over what I make now.

How bad of a ribben is this Northern boy going to get?

I wish it were that way where I live. Here that salary won't even get you started. Average salary here is 6 digits and a 1 bedroom condo will run you $450k+.
