I just received this E-mail from a reliable source.

Doc.

Subject: BIG virus coming

Subject:

This is indeed true. I just checked snopes.com. Please be careful BIG virus coming
I checked with Norton Anti-Virus, and they are gearing up for this virus!
I checked snopes.com, this morning, and it is for real!!
Get this E-mail message sent around to your contacts ASAP. PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS!
You should be alert during the next several weeks. Do not open any message with an attachment entitled 'POSTCARD,' regardless of who sent it to you.
It is a virus which opens A POSTCARD IMAGE, which 'burns' the whole hard disc (C drive) of your computer.
This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address in his/her contact list.
This is the reason why you need to send this e-mail to all your contacts. It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus and open it.
If you receive a mail called' POSTCARD,' even though sent to you by a friend, do not open it.! This includes all cards, too. Shut down your computer immediately.
This is the worst virus announced by CNN. It has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever.
This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where your vital information is kept.
COPY THIS E-MAIL, AND SEND IT TO YOUR FRIENDS. REMEMBER: IF YOU SEND IT TO THEM, YOU WILL BENEFIT ALL OF US.

...and don't open any "greeting cards" either.

A very good friend of mine made that bad mistake and even with active virus scan in operation, got the "VirTool:WinNT/Tibs.gen!A" virus / rootkit. What a mess.

The good news is that most virus scanners with up to date virus signatures will take care of this one. Fix for that one is to boot into "Safe" mode to prevent the virus from launching, and run your virus scan from that mode. That usually gets the mess cleaned up. Running the virus scanner with Windows running normally usually won't clean up the mess as the files are locked and won't allow the virus scanner to have access. Ergo, you have to boot up in safe mode.

....let's be careful out there, kids....

Doc you post this as comical.. right? and not... in seriousness...right?

I can assure you it's a farce; though you should always be wary of attachments you don't recognize, or are not expecting.

edit to add from snopes:

Although the Postcard virus is real, it isn't a "BIG VIRUS COMING" (it's already been around in multiple forms for a long time now), it will not "burn the whole hard disc" of your computer, CNN didn't classify it as the "worst virus" ever, and it doesn't arrive in messages bearing a subject line of 'Invitation.'

A good strategy to remain virus-free is to simply not open any email whatsoever unless the sender calls to notify you ahead of time. Sometimes such precaution annoys people, but that just leaves you with more time to download pornography from Russian websites.

Doc.

I got an email from an unknown source with an attachment for a postcard from a family member about three Saturdays ago. Came in Monday morning with a company wide email from head of IT warning us not to open any emails like the ones described on the snopes sight. It's real..... but it ain't Y2K!
