This weekend is my first wedding anniversary. To mark the solemn occasion ;), the missus and I are heading to NYC for the night, taking in a show, and staying at the Loews Regency near Central Park. I'm looking for a recommendation for a good place to eat either before or after that won't break the bank, seeing as how I've already spent a bundle on the tickets and room.

Thanks in advance!

Go down to Del Frisco's steak house. They have the BEST steaks in NYC, dinner will run you about $50-$75 per person sans wine but well worth it. It's the kind of place that the Mrs. will talk about for a long long time. Tell 'em AngryFish sent ya!

1221 Avenue of the Americas
New York, NY 10020
(212) 575-5129

If you get there early enough or stay the next day you have to go to Lonbardi's Pizza at 32 Spring St. You'll never look at pizza the same way again.

Lombardi's
32 Spring St
New York, NY 10012-4173
(212) 941-7994

Cross Street: Corner of Spring and Mott Street (the number 6 subway line is only a block away)

Wow, there are so many places that it really all depends on what you're after food-wise and what constitutes "break-the-bank."

I prefer Peter Lugers when it comes steaks. Hand's down, it's amazing. Cash only there, so be advised.

Then there's Patsy's (legendary, if you can get in), Rao's (legendary), The Palm (legendary), Babbo (Mario Batali's place), Bolo/Mesa Grill (both owned by Bobby Flay), Tribeca Grill (Deniro's place), The View (a circular/rotating restaurant...excellent too), and there's a million other places that are combinations of off-the-beaten-path and hole-in-the-wall that are each outstanding. You'll be in NYC, one of the largest cities in the world, so whatever you want, it's there.

If you get the chance, you'll need to hit Ray's Pizza (the original) and have a Gray's Papaya dog.

Edited to add...

There's also Les Halles (Anthony Bourdain's place), one of which we are lucky enough to have here in Coral Gables. And, very much in the Les Halles style, ther is Balthazar. Long waits without a reservation, but very good.

Alfred Portale's Gotham also comes to mind now. Very, very good.

Also, speaking of Miami-New York restaurants, Joe Allen's in NYC is excellent, and very afforadable price wise. There's one here on Miami Beach as well and I go frequently.

There's also Les Halles

Great choice. Not in the immediate area, but a quick cab ride away. Gotta like meat though. Shouldn't break the bank.
Not too far from you will be Carmine's (44th between 7th & 8th), family style Italian.
Haru for great sushi (Park & 48th).
Bombay Masala (49th between 6th and 7th) for Indian.
These other joints are just good food, not particularly exotic or glamorous.
Have a great time.

edit- Real good pizza at Bella Napoli (49th between 6th & 7th).

I know many will not agree with this, but my recommendation as a Native New Yorker is to leave your hotel, start walking down the street and let something surprize you. I know it does not sound like a great plan but sometimes life is in the suprize. Enjoy!!

x2

And a personal favorite of mine is downtown in SoHo, LeCole. They have two prix fixe menus, same price (based on the time you will be there) that I find to be very reasonable in price. Reservations are a must as the spots fill up quickly.

Congrats on the anniversary!

Congrats on the 1st wedding anniversary

When my wife and I were in NYC back in March we saw a show and then hit the Carnegie Deli. It's tough to beat the simple pleasure of a foot tall pastrami sandwich. What NYC is all about.

An NYC insiders secret....amazing world class chef and very small prices.....and not to far from where you will be staying

edit: took the link out and PM'ed him so the place doesn't get overrun with dammed tourists...... :sign: :sign:

Thanks for all the recommendations, all...some I've been to before (like Carmine's), and some are completely new to me. I guess I should have qualified "break the bank" as under $200 for the whole meal. The Palm (we have one in Philly) and Peter Luger's might be a bit out of our price range right now, but maybe someday! Keep the suggestions coming, as I'll be looking them all up online. Of course, I'll provide a complete report when we get back!

I'm going to have to agree with SJM on this one. Some of the best places I've eaten in the city have come from just walking around, and stopping in a place. Congrats on the anniversary, and good luck in your choice.

My favorite place in the city in in the village, called Zum Schneider.
It's german food, so not vegetarian friendly (my wife is a veg) but if you're into huge portions, good beers, and 'meat and potato with a litre of beer' it's the hookup.
Thier website is http://www.zumschneider.com/

They've got some outside dining, so if the weather is nice it's a great place to people watch. I'd recommend the Weihenstephaner Weissbier and the pork shoulder special (if it's still available)

Have a great time and happy anniversary!

Go with mine and you will be out the door and full and happy for under a 100 with tip. Plus if it is not as good as I am telling you it is (I live and work in NYC and only step off this island whne I get on my boat, so I know the truth unlike these other jokers.... :sign: ) it is on me!

So how come you never told me about this place? I know you're still pissed about the Dbacks, but that's just mean. :sign:

Actually I agree 100%, whenever the wife and I go, we don't have a plan and still find stuff to do all day. Fat Sal's is a couple blocks west of times square and not even close to breaking the bank. My wife and I love pizzaria pizza and it was awesome.
