OK my first newb Question

Years ago an experienced cigar smoker told me smoking with the paper label on the cigar is low class, bush league, etc. When I visit my favorite local smoke shop, nobody there removes the label while smoking. Pointless question I know, I'm just curious.

personal preference. i smoke with the band on. makes no difference unless you accidently smoke the band.

However, to answer you question. I leave it on until I must take it off to keep it from burning. Why? Because I've had way too many episodes where I take it off early and the glue hasn't warmed up enough yet on it and it tears my wrapper up. Some will tell you it's a pompous thing to do, but I just don't want to risk screwing up my wrapper.

The cigar smokes the same whether it's on or off (unless you smoke the band, that is ). That being said, do whatever you want. I personally leave mine on until it's about 1/2 way done to let the glue on the band heat up a bit to make it easier to remove (as Brickhouse said). Regardless no one should think less of you no matter which way you choose to go.

Apparently it's a cultural thing Oz. Though I've never been , I've read that in Europe it's considered ill mannered and braggadocios to leave the band on. Here in the States we don't really care.

I’ve herd differently, than in Europe you leave the band on and you hold it by the band as not to discolor your fingers if it’s oily. In the states most folks leave them on because they like others to see what there smoking.

In reality I don’t think it matters much unless your at the country club, then do what they do.

I am sure that just about everything has been covered at one time or another on this board. If the rule was that you had to use search that was all everyone would be doing here and there would be no discussion with the exception of the few discussions about new products and trades.

I usually take the band off so I can smoke the stick to the nub (if it is good that is). If I wait too long it is harder to get the band off of the cigar. Many cigars I smoke have no bands :whistling: .

Actually, this comes from the British and as far as I know, exclusive only to them.
There is some spin off to countries like Australia and others who are part of the British
Commonwealth.

It started years ago so as not to embarrass any gentlemen who could not afford to
smoke a good cigar.

I'm a "band off" kinda guy, more than anything because I'm a cheap SOB and usually smoke 'em down till I can't hang onto them anymore..... :laugh:

To facilitate the removal of said bands, I have this really cool little swiss army knife. I think it's the smallest folder Victronox makes; it's key fob size. It's got the thinnest little razor sharp blade on it and it usually gets under the end of most bands effortlessly and off they come. I've never managed to damage a wrapper with this but maybe I'm lucky.....

If they show any resistance, I'm with BrickHouse in that I'll smoke them for a while to get the glue warmed up, then I'll try to remove them again.

I leave 'em on until the glue softens then remove them. Sometimes I don't have to wait as the band is loose enough. Besides the avoidance of wrapper damage, it also reminds me to rotate the cigar as I smoke. The label makes a nice reference point if it's still there; if it's not, oh well.

I've not experienced that anywhere in Europe I've been smoking cigars. Sounds like urban legend to me.
