I almost feel sorry for Mayor Daley, Chicago is the first city to lose and then Tokyo. Rio and Madrid are left with Rio being the favorite. Maybe all those billion that were accrued from the leasing of the tollway and meters will be used to improve the city and not be lost into someone's pocket. :whistling:

Really not a surprise about Chicago being out. Personally, it seems to me that Rio has been a fairly clear favorite from early on in the process. Their president spent 2 days here vs. a couple of house for our Pres in his home town. It's no wonder the Olympic Committee passed on Chicago.

I don't think the IOC was interested in graft becoming an exhibition sport.

Doc.

That's funny! I was under the impression that graft was an intregal part of the Olympics.Maybe i'm just a hopeless romantic or a hopelessly political Chicagoan. Either way politics trumps everything! :sign:

I want to personaly thank Michelle Obama for "sacrificing" by flying in perhaps the coolest private jet in the world. Staying in the finest hotel in Europe, and probably eating some great food. All for us Americans.

Thank you so much.

Rio is an incredible city, and I'm glad to see they got it. It's about time a South American country won.

And if you ever get a chance to go to Rio, by all means GO. You won't be disappointed. The beaches are great, the women are beautiful and everyone eats 5 pounds of beef a day. Paradise!

The Chicago machine should have just written the check instead of Obama spending the million or so to go over there. Bidness as usual.

What I find interesting is how all the news agencies were acting like Chicago was a shoe-in. Evidently the US wasn't even in the running considering we got eliminated in the first round. What information was the media using for their "source" and how did they all get it wrong? Good for RIO and all of course, but I am a little sad that the US didn't get it.

The funny thing is that we can't afford to run the city now but they wanted to spend more money on having it here. I am glad that Chicago got dumped.

I agree it was a risky move and a bit short sighted, but had the olympics actually been approved for Chicago, it probably would have done a lot for the area. Atlanta and the surrounding cities benefited greatly from having the Olympics here in '96. That said, in retrospect there probably were better things to invest in. I wonder, did everyone think that this was as sure of a thing as the press did? Maybe the powers that be thought this was a done deal and was just as surprised as everyone else when Chicago didn't make the cut. In that case, this would look like a pretty smart move on the surface... I doubt well ever know for sure. I'm sure this is getting a little too close to the topic of politics at this point, so I'll bow out for now. I do feel a bit sorry for the people of Chicago though. They've had a rough couple of years now... :-(
