It's the birthday of Bo Diddley, born Elias Bates in McComb, Mississippi (1928). As a young man he wrote songs such as "Uncle John" and "Who Do You Love?" which became the foundation for early rock and roll. He made a series of huge hits for Chess Records, but by the 1970s, he was so down-and-out that he was playing one-night jobs with garage bands for 200 dollars and the cost of a hotel room. He told his band before every show, "This is the way it works. The drummer should watch my hips and the bass player should watch my shoulders."

Also on this day in 1922 the USSR was established Link

As a young teenager I once came home with a George Thorogood album and as I was blasting it upstairs in my bedroom the old man came a knocking on the door and asked "what in gods name is that". He then proceeded to break out the Bo Diddley records and from there on I was hooked!

One of the staples of every band in my youth. "Who do you Love" could be done as a straight up rocker like Thorogood or as a 30+ minute extended jam like the Dead. God I love that song. Can't forget Bo's Guitar either, nobody else played that box 'cept him.

One of my absolute favorite musicians! I discovered him later in my music life and regret that I didn't really listen to his music earlier.

 for this "On This Day..."
