On this day in 1962 Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points, went 36-63 from the field, hit 28-32 free throws, had 25 rebounds, and 2 assists to lead the Warriors to a win over the Knicks 169-147. These numbers never cease to amaze me and this was a big day in NBA history.
 
And he did it in Hershey PA. Supposedly the ball used is held by a local guy.
 
I still contend that he is the greatest the NBA has ever seen, with all due respect to Mr. Jordan.
 
Too bad he had to play against Bill Russell. He might have been great.

True statement, about television how its changed every sport. Some people like myself, have a hard time calling someone the greatest, if we have never seen them play, which really isnt fair to those older athlete. For some reason I think the only true older athlete that is still called the greatest of all time through all the generations is Babe Ruth. Large part of that I believe is because of how much we still see a product of Babe Ruth around us, and the fact that every announcer in the game, at least mentions the Name Babe Ruth 3 to 4 times a week.

edit to add: About Wilt Chamberlain for some reason doesnt strike me as the greatest. Though ONE of the greatest yes. My greatest goes to a man by the name of Oscar Robinson
 
Wilt is no doubt one of the all time greats in my book. It doesn't hurt that he happened to attend the best university in the nation being the University of Kansas! ;)
 
Wilt was one of the greats, along with Russell.

The greatest player ever was the Big O. You can look it up. He averaged a triple, double for a whole season, not even Jordan was able to do that!

Haha SportCenter did a thing on it this morning. They combined Lebron's 42 and Wade's 41 and Nowtizki's 28 to get 101 made me laugh

That's ultimately what it comes down to in the NBA Doc, though I realize how hard it must have been to score 100 points in a game, I also realize how hard it is for any player to lead their team to 9 championships. When its all said and done how many points you score means nothing if you don't win it all. Take Wade last night for example, scored 40+ but his team still lost so who cares that he scored 40? Lebron is a great player but until he leads Cleveland (or NY maybe?) to a championship his achievements wont hold as much weight. This is why IMO Kobe (though I dislike the Lakers) is the best active player in the league.
 
As great as Russell was, and he was great, the Celtics won those titles not Russell. Those teams were loaded with talent of which Russell was the best. Who knows what would have happened had Wilt been on those teams. Could he have been the team player and leader Russell was? I'm not sure but I am sure Wilt would have won a decent amount of titles if the roles were reversed. But Russell's basketball IQ from everything I have read was pretty amazing for the time.

Hate to pull rank on you, young fella, but you weren't there. Wilt was not a team player. He could never have been a Celtic.

I will not acknowledge any Boston NBA championships until the team changes the pronunciation of their team name to match that of the people they were named after. Until that happens, in my book it is Chamberlain - 1 and Boston - 0. :laugh:
