Took my 98 Pathfinder in for some front axle work yesterday. Original estimate, $400.
Got a followup call saying Rear shocks are shot, so are the rear stabilizers( dont know what those are), vehicle needs fron-end alignment to go with front axle work.

When all was said and done my $400 bill became $1800. Vehicle just went over 100,000 miles.

Hope I wont have to spend that kind of money on it again for another 100,000 miles.

I know - I am kidding myself.

That's a lot of cigars......

Ouch...My brother was a mechanic and I saw the book they used to charge for work. its insane and no kidding...That is alot of cigars. :(

I know what you mean...

I have a truck with a little over 220,000 miles on it. I do a majority of any work needed on it myself.

Thing is, just when you get something taken care of, something else pops up.

I keep saying I'm going to buy something new but I want to see this thing make 300,000.

I feel your pain.

I've had good luck with my VW's. I buy 'em new, put 250,000 on them, and sell them. Got ten years out of the first one, twelve out of the second. My 2004 TDI just turned 40K. So far....so good.

Good Luck - B.B.S.

My 98 Pathfinder needs front end work, just have not discovered the extent yet.

I've got a 92' Jeep Wrangler that I purchased brand new in Germany and there are a few things that I need to take care of as well. Here we go:
1) new tires (already got roughly 40,000 miles from present ones)
2) replace the radiator (top seam is starting to go)
3) needs new muffler (has a hole about the size of a tennis ball)

I only use it to go to work right now and run around town in it as I also have a 04' Explorer Sport Trac. The most expensive item above is the tires since I'm running 31X10.50R15RWL and they are averaging $110 a piece plus mounting and ect. New exhaust system $150 installed (est) and a rebuilt radiator goes for another $150 (est.). So I'm lookin' at around spending $800 myself as well. Thank god that I presently have plenty of ceegars on hand......... :D  :p

I can empathize. We recently did rear struts ($650) and front crank seal and timing belt ($600) on our Forester. We're also due for two new sets of tires, one for the Forester and one for my WRX. ($400-500 a set). So yeah, cars are money pits.

I would have done the rear struts myself but it was winter. :sign:

Another Subie fan... I love my Forester. Consumer reports named Subie number one in reliablility last year so I'm hoping they are right. Where I live you need a great AWD system.

Its seems car repairs come in three's!
I had to replace my Water Pump, Power Window motor, and my engine fan, all with in 4-5 weeks.

that sucks man, struts and shocks dont run that much though, neither do front end alignments. Seems high IMO, i just sold me truck because the trans was going, got a new impala, hopefully i can rack the milage up on er.

Cars are nothing but money pits and dealership service shops and mechanics are nothing but theives.

Yeah - but it sure beats the hell out of bicycling everywhere...

Then again - that friggen chain broke last year and I took it to the bicycle shop - damn thing cost about $75 to fix (they sold me the tune up with it). Friggen ripoffs....

I just paid 1600 euro in car repairs on my Mitubishi Pajero. It is a turbo diesel fuel injection pump, exhaust pipe, front fan pulley, shocks, fuel filter and a bunch of other crap i cant translate.
