Opus X Fuente Fuente

Where's a picture of someone slapping their forehead when they need it?

After all of this thought about the Opus, I finally finished my work and ran down to the shop to only find out someone else had beaten me to the punch and bought the remaining stock. :0

Talk about disappointment. That's what was helping me stay focused on my work today; the thought of coming home with half a box of Opus X. Hmmmm... did one of you Illinois boys take a road trip down to Carbondale today?

Oh well, the shop owner thinks he should be able to get more early January.

The Fuente Fuente size is my favorite Opus,it retails for 9.00. Opus smoke better at lower humidity levels 58-62 percent. Their thick wrapper needs time to dry out and match the humidity levels of the binder and filler. I smoke them fresh( a few months old) and smoke them aged ( a few years old ), it depends on what my mood is. There are times when a fresh Opus (and the strength it provides) is what I want at the end of a 5-6 cigar day.

and here I was thinking about taking a road trip down there since im only about an hour, hour and a half away from the boarder, haven’t seen any on the shelf in this state aside from a sampler.

sorry to bring up an old thread but the shop right downstairs has these for $11.95 each right now. I see the msrp is $9. Is the $11.95 asking price too much?

I posted this link a few weeks ago trying to get it out to as many Opus lovers as possible. Try going to CigarsbyGeno and taking a look at their prices on Opus. They are very reasonably priced, and they seem to have an endless supply of Opus. The owner is personal friends with Carlos Fuente, so he seems to get quite a bit. They also do not put a limit on the number of Opus you can buy which I have seen from many other shops.

I would suggest calling one of there stores prior to ordering....while the store is top notch, the website seems to run a bit behind. You can order directly from the store over the phone I believe. If not, I can get any Opus and ship them to anyone interested as well. I live about 15 minutes from the store :D .

Dave-

The only suggestion I can make is to buy one, and see if it's worth $11.95 to you.

As Opus prices go, it's not entirely out of line - you could pay much more elsewhere. My understanding is that tobacco taxes in NC are pretty low, so it sounds like you'd be paying a couple/few bucks more than MSRP.

Limit was 4 and they are $11.50 ea. Picked up 4 with the total being $49.45. I've smoked one opus before it was mighty tasty. Might send a coworker down to get me 4 more.

I think he is talking about age, not humidity.  Let them age a little.

Perhap I may have been confusing the two things (humidity and age). However, in a situation like this where the Opus have probably been sitting for a while, it's not unlikely that they have 6 months of age on them already. Therefore, if that's the case (and that's a big "if") then they ought to be ready to smoke right away, correct?

Curious about this answer myself. I understand the need for aging, but who is to say that these things haven't been sitting in this smoke shops humi for a year or more. If this was the case would they not be prime for smoking? I've often wondered why the need to age cigars that perhaps have already been aging for who knows how long in another humidor.

Exactly my point ;)

I guess the question is whether you can find out for sure if they really are aged. In my case, the 70 yr old man who I predominately see in the shop may very well not know. However, the younger man (who I believe owns the shop) probably would know (however he hangs out in the back and I rarely see him). The only question is whether he would be honest with me or not.

I recently got the chance to smoke an eleven year old Opus X, compliments of a very generous BOTL from here. All I can say, is that the experience made me want to take all my Opus Xs and bury them at the the bottom of my locker and not touch them for a few years. The difference between a young and aged Opus is night and day. I would say that the flavor progression is as distinct, if not more so, as what you get from aging good Habanos.

edited for grammar and for not noticing how old this thread is...whoops.

Gentleman, the prices posted on this site is from one state and not all states that sell opus. It also only reflects the tobacco tax for that state and no other. I do believe it is for the state of IL. Here in GA that price is in line with most of the shops that are a opus account. Other shops that have the higher prices are not a opus account and your at the mercy of the owner.

This was fun to read - a post that I started a year ago concerning my journey for Opus that came up empty. The shop in my town (that I mention earlier in this thread) is f-n useless. I don't even go there any longer. I got tired of walking in and walking out empty handed. Time to get my ass down to Tampa.

Went to my two locals today at lunch and both had FFOX and No. 4's for $14.95 each. Personally while I love them I don't think they are worth the price.
