OTB Hygrometer accuracy

When you first got your hygrometer and did the salt calibration test how accurate was it Out-of-The-Box? I got a simple Radio Shack (Canadians now call it "The Source" - same crappy stuff, just a different name), I did mine and got a reading of 68%. I suspected that I had not added enough water to the salt as it was still really dry so I added exactly 3 more drops (to my tablespoon of salt) and did the test again twice. This time both results were 74%!! I am kind of surprised by a cheap Radio Shack hygrometer's accuracy so I had to ask here...??

My Radio Shack hygro (can't remember the #, but it's just a little rectangular Humidity/Temp unit) was spot on out of the box and still is 1 1/2 yrs later.

Not bad for the price I got it at with the $10 off coupon.

Probably the best cigar-related bargain I've gotten.

I have two Radio shack hyg. and both tested 75% out of the box

Doc.

One of my two Radio Shack hygrometers was 2% off, the other was dead on. I will be re-doing a salt test this weekend to verify no changes for the past year.

I have three hygro's from Little Havana; two of the "Micro" size and one of the "Perfecto" size. All three, in the same bag at the same time, tested on the money @ 75%. They tell me that they do 100% QC on outgoing hygros....sure like mine.

Just got 2 of the "micro" sizes as well. Both tested dead on and are now in my new humidors that I got for xmas! :D Need another one already though! had a brain fart when I ordered them and didn't order enough. Very happy with them so far!

I like the compact size. I might order a few to update some of my current LCD hygrometers.

Has anybody seen digital's change over time. In theory they shouldn't but....

I was wondering the same thing. Does accuracy suffer with loss of battery life. I dont think it should but???

I have two Radio Shacks...one is +4 and the other is +2

Not sure about battery life but I replaced all the batteries in mine at the first of the year (one year old) just to be sure. L.H. sells the batteries very reasonably and as I recall the shipping was free.

Haven't tested mine since I got the "Perfecto" about six months ago. May get around to it again...truth is they seem stable as can be.

This thread got me thinking about the salt test. The thread started says hed added 3 drops of water and got a 6 point increase in humidity. How do I know I have exactly the right amount of water? I used a bottle cap from a 2 liter and enough salt to fill it. My reading came up 77. Could I have just had too much water in the salt?

I have a small digital from a few years ago, just did my salt test a few days ago and I had to do it like 3 times. Got 67 percent my first time, and I said "that can't be right"...so I did it again and added less water. Got 71 percent that time. Said doh! and added 2 drops of water and re-stirred. Got 74 percent after leaving it for 12 hours in that solution. I'm just guessing I had the right amount of water in that time, or as close as I'm gonna get anyway. But like smoke posted, I too had troubles with knowing exactly how much water to add.
