Outdoor heating recommendations?

I did a quick search, and didn't find a relevant post about what I am sure would have been asked recently: What is an effective outdoor heating solution?

Australia loves to copy the UK and America when it comes to anti smoking laws. As of November last year, there is no smoking in any pubic building, no exceptions. This, of course, has forced me to retreat to my cottage for a stogie... but the nights are getting mighty cold now, and I need some suggestions for a good outdoor heating setup for my yard.

Do I go Gas Heater like a lot of beer gardens and restaurants have? A fire-pit/brazier? Chiminea? What works for you guys?

p.s. I am still mighty pissed off about the 'denormalisation' efforts of Big Brother when it comes to smokers. Denormalisation? Sounds like the concept was ripped straight from the pages of 1984 by George Orwell.

Admittedly, it doesn't get all that cold here in SC, but my kids got me one of those umbrella type propane fired heaters for Christmas a couple of years ago. It works great for me! As a matter of fact, it can get almost too warm, at times!! It doesn't use a great deal of propane, but it throws a great amount of heat, YMMV!
 
I love my little chiminea, but if ease and spontenaiety are to be considered, you just can't beat propane.

HEY! I am one of those SoCal'ers and I resent that :D ....In my area, just outside LA, it gets into the 30's easily.... with wind chill it can be pretty frigid. Not Denver frigid, but it does get cold.
I do admit I'm a wuss when it comes to cold weather though! :laugh:

I looked at this thing up close last weekend when I stopped by CW; it appeared pretty solid although I haven't actually used one. What I like is that it's mobile.

I would have gotten one, but I didn't see the logic seeing it's been in the 90's lately.

When I do get one I'll let ya know.....or better yet, you can come over and see it for yourself. :rolleyes: :rolleyes:
 
Seadub picked one up...he loves it.

There's a thread some where that talks about these....I use the Big Buddy Propane heater in my garage...very nice!
 
How about something like this? Its a natural gas fire pit.

I live in Southwest Ohio which has a pretty variable climate. I have both a propane heater and a fire pit. The propane heater that I chose is one that is for use in sitting areas - in other words it aims its heat lower than most of the umbrella types. The tall umbrella types seem to make you stand to get the heat (there are some smaller ones that can sit on a table but I needed something bigger). I like my propane heater just fine. It has its place because propane is quick, hot and ready to fire up on short notice.

That being said, I tend to like evenings with my fire pit a little more. The fire pit that I have is somewhat portable. I can easily move it, when not burning, from my deck to my yard. I have plenty of random firewood to keep it rolling and it is a nice and easy to clean set up...the brand name is Whalen if that makes a difference.

I think my thoughts is this: If you are going to need quick heat you can't beat the propane. If you have the time and the supplies, the fire pit with its wood burning is more interesting, more attractive and more authentic. I guess there is just something about sitting around a fire that I like.

I have one that I won at the Hurricane Herf 3 or 4 years ago. They work GREAT! They take a few minutes to start deflecting heat (the big round shield on top) but once it's up and running, awesome to knock the chill off.

They don't work great when it's freezing though or there is a cold wind. I think because of the height.
