I am looking for a bit of history on the changeover from 25 count boxes to 26 for the thousand series. Are they now only producing 26 count boxes? I have seen both for sale and if the 25 count boxes indicate they may have a bit of age on them, it would be nice to know. TIA!

If this has been covered point me in the right direction.

Didn't Lew just tell us about the upcoming shortage of Spanish Cedar. I'm sure this has something to do with it. That filler strip was just too valuable.

I'm pretty sure there's a prohibition on the harvesting of spanish cedar in Nicaragua, so that's the reason. As for age, yes, a 25count box will have some age on it, I think the last month that saw 25 count x000s was Sept 06 (but I'm not sure on that - that's the latest I've seen them).

"It's a permanent change," said Jorge. "We changed the wood used in our boxes for the regular Padron line; it's not cedar anymore."

"There's a moratorium on cedar cutting in Nicaragua, so we went to 26 cigars in our boxes of Padron only. The 1964 Anniversary Series and 1926 Series will stay the same (as they are now)."

The other reason for the change had to do with the original reason for the cigar blocks at all. Cigars were taxed on a count of 1000, so multiples of 25 made that a lot easier. To get 25 in two rows you needed one row of 12 and one row of 13, with the block taking up the space where a cigar would have been. Since that has changed, you seen manufacturers offer boxes in all sorts of odd quantities: 12, 15, 24, 26, 30, etc...

Fascinating. Thanks for the info. This is one aspect of cigar packaging I haven't paid much attention to.
