Picking my first motorcycle

My first big bike was a Harley-Davidson Sportster. I can recommend that :-)

I've ridden dozens of different bikes and owned a few. I've become rather fond of the Triumph triples. I find they are the nicest blend, in terms of motor. The 3 cylinder lump has the broad torque band of a twin, but with the top end rush of a 4. I'm on my 3rd one now, and went from a "sport tourer" (Sprint RS) to a "dual purpose" Tiger.

Many thousands of miles, no trouble, and no regrets!

Obviously a man of good taste and distinction.
I owned a t595 for many years and the only problem I ever had with it was bad fuel mileage :whistling:

Thanks. Quite the opposite experience for me with regard to fuel. I get between 48 and 52mpg with the 955i lump, and it was the same for the Sprint. I suppose that's the difference in the engine tune levels for the 128hp Daytona vs. the 105hp for the Tiger & Sprint. If I really ride the wheels off it, the fuel economy drops down to as low as 42-45, but I don't do that so much anymore after too many tokens of appreciation from various police departments. I got about all I'm ever going to get out of track days, it's cost-value ratio went out for me. These days I take it easy, and it's nice to get a 230-250 mile ride in before having to refuel.

Congrats on the new bike! make sure you have all your proper riding gear and my biggest advice is to remember that your front brake is 90% of your stopping power. Get used to using it. A lot of guys/girls who are new to riding dont understand this, first time they have to stop quickly they panic and lock up the back brake and just slide!

good luck, be safe.

Passed my Basic RiderCourse on Sunday - 100% on the written test and full marks (no deductions) on the skills test. I am now a fully qualified parking lot motorcyclist. You may want to avoid driving in PA for the next couple of weeks. :)

Congrats on passing the course! Ride safe and enjoy! And good choice on the bike.

I'm taking the experienced rider course next weekend. I thought it would be a nice way to brush up on forgotten/seldom used skills as well as a chance to try all of those obstacles and boxes on a real bike instead of those tiny 250's in the basic course.

I want a motorcycle so bad! I am going to start with an early 80s honda cb750 or equivelent. Ultimately, I want a triumph thruxton.

I have a '93 CB750, and the 1991-03 CB750 is really at the sweet spot for used bikes right now - old enough to be cheap as dirt, new enough to not be a collector's item, recent enough to have plenty of spare parts available, and designed to last indefinitely with minimal maintenance.

But the '80's CB750 (and 650 and 700s) is pretty damn nice-looking - just be ready to get your hands dirty on occasion.

A modern sportsbike just does not have enough passenger room...are you looking for fuel injection? Shaft Drive?...I like these options because there is less maintenance...but at least fuel injection.....this limits you to bikes that have been made roughly in last 8 or so years...sporty bikes with passenger room are also called Naked, Standard or UJM's....I am partial to Triumphs Speed Triple (bad to the bone)...Kawi ZRX-1100 and 1200, Suzuki Bandit 1200, and Yamaha FZ1...depending on the year these will be fuel injected....I also love BMW Boxers....super super reliable...I had one in France that had almost 200k km's....these (boxers in your price range) for most part are not fuel injected but they are shaft drive and very good for touring...cheers David
