Just had one of these the other day. From what I understand, they are made with pre-embargo Cuban tobacco. Great smoke! :thumbs: Very smooth, good construction and very nice draw. Anyone else had any experience with these? They run about $10.00 a stick.

My local also just showed me a box of Pinar L.E. (only 311 boxes, his was box 310). He broke the seal right in front of me. This was a box of Pinars rolled 1955 (yes, these cigars are now 50 years old). Had a little type-written note by the roller, etc. Made from Cifuentes tobacco. $21.00/stick.
 
For $21.00/stick, you could buy some damn fine island smokes.
 
I aone again just a couple of weeks ago courtesy of a friend of mine who thought they were good. I think they are above average. Since I did not pay for it I have no comments regarding cost to value. It was a nice smoke and it changed character throughout. I totally finished it because the guy who gave it to me was sitting there and I wasn't going to be rude. If it were $10.00 I think I could find other cigars I would rather spend the $10 to buy. It was good but not great...IMHO.
 
Haven't heard a whole lot of good things about them. I'm always hesitant because lord knows what they've been through the last forty years or so. Glad to hear that you did find a good stick. :thumbs:
 
I enjoyed the one I had - and I'm glad - because it was corona size and about $13 a pop... Great construction, good smoke (only a bit tight on the draw), nice flavors, etc. But, like Golfgar says - I can find some other cigars in that price range I like better.
 
That's what I figured regarding price/value. There are some pretty damn fine smokes to be had at ~$10-15 a stick that are probably better than these (Padron '64s and Anejos for example). Thanks for the input everyone...

just wanted you to know for sake of the truth is all.

These are some lines in an interview with Henry Berger on the subject.(owner of Esteli tobacco).
"If there is any Cuban pre-embargo tobacco out there today i dont exist.
"If there was any Cuba tobacco it was gone during the boom to claim otherwise is just lying to the consumer". And last As far as cigarmakers claiming the covert use of illicit cuban leaf in there blends,pre embargo and otherwise? Cuba does not sell tobacco outside of cuba anymore, they only sell cigars.
So for the 20$ a stick it would probably do well to pick up some real cubans instead.
 
My local tinderbox shop, eshaw's shop, got them along time ago, and my roomate and I got a couple. I smelt mine and gave me his. It was terrible. Maybe it was a fluke, but I won't be trying it again... I posted on this:

I kind of wondered about that myself. The last time that I bought cigars at a land-line business(LOL-good one right!!?) they had a few boxes of Pinars. Each one had a tag like thing that supposedly guaranteed "authenticity" It was a bright, star like thing that was embossed on the tag/card. I was very tempted to try it, but I opted for an Opus instead. :thumbs:
 
You did better with the Opus than the Pinar. You can count me a member of the "good but not great" crowd. Not a bad stick, but there are better ones for the money.

I just think for 20$ a stick I could find at least two boxes of cubans I'd like two have. But like I said if they are worth it pre-embargo or no smoke-um. **** I like the damn, "pre-embargos" gurkhas just cant see dishing out the cash when there are so many that are real cubans to be had.

He quit smoking...I can see why smoking those nasty Cohibas all the time. Flame suit on full power :cool: No really, did he have some physical problems or something?
