WHOO! I'm all excited. This morning my new Peterson showed up. It's one of the St. Patrick's pipes, they put out a few new ones every year. Anyway, I was wondering... Do any of you guys also smoke a pipe? If ya do, what's yer favorite blend? I have to admit to a unusual blend of black raspberry and sometimes an old fashion blend of apple/cinnamon. But I absolutley love the turkish/cavendish blends. Strong, yet cool, flavorful yet soothing.

I'm pretty stoked tho about this pipe, I stopped smoking my old one because, well, it was OOOOOOOLD. It's my fathers pipe, and he never really took good care of it. Reaming it to hell didn't work, so I just stopped, put it away and researched for about a year before picking the Peterson.

I've done it a little bit. I need to learn how to better smoke a pipe though. It keeps going out on me, and then once I get it going, it bites.

I think Shadow (Bill) is into pipes also. There sure seems be alot of different tobacco for pipes, and many sound really tasty!

I have recently taken the dive into the world of pipes, and it has been interesting. Yes there are many many blends.

never tried one but am curious.
my wife has several of her granfathers pipes.
do you think they're worth cleaning and trying?
if so hw would i go about cleaning? ???

Been smoking pipes for over 30 years. My favorite blend is one that my local guy makes called 221 Baker Street. It is a latakia blend. I have always leaned towards heavier tobaccos with latakia in it.

Glen, go to your local shop and see if they will clean the pipes for you, also if you need any of the stems replaced they should be able to do that for you. My local guy gets estate pipes in all the time and sends them to Boswell's Pipes in Chambersburg, PA for cleaning and repairs and then he sells them at his shop. I've been able to pick up some old Petersons and various Italian pipes at a great price that way.

Heya Shadow... How tight do you pack your bowl? I tend to leave it a bit loose, and like Rod, it always goes out. I'm a confused on how tight to pack it. My father only filled it half way, but jammed it down with his thumb before lighting it.

What's your method?

I pack the bowl full, then I take my pipe tool and use the stick part and put it in the center of the tobacco down to the bottom of the bowl. I then cover the bowl with two fingers with the pipe tool in between them and pull the tool out of the bowl. As I'm smoking I will occasionally tamp the ash down in the bowl with the tamper part of the pipe tool. This action tends to loosen the tobacco enough to burn without it going out.

I was shown this method by a gentleman that I met at the tobacco shop that I use to go to in Washington, DC way back when.

Hey Guys :)

I have been smoking pipes off and on for about 20 years or so. For me the key to constant burn is limiting the amount of air allowed in. When you take a smoke try putting your fingers over the top of the bowl and then using them by allowing a crack between your fingers to regulate the airflow. Using this method I seldom have one go out.

Unlike the cigar... you may find that a slightly faster (more frequent) "toke count" may be necessary. Dont fret it... they seem to burn forever, and don't usually get hot........( depending on your tobacco mix.)

Some of the aromatics using Cherry seem to burn hot as hell no matter what you do. Go with some of the blacker and moister mixes, and you wont have a problem. I use a mix called " North Sea", the most frequently found commercial alt is "Captain Black Royale" Most of these mixes are very sweet and aromatic and many rum or liquer cured.

Thanks guys for the packing tips... I'd have to say tonight, I used both of your guys suggestions and my pack didn't go out every 5 seconds LOL... I was able to sit back for a good 30 mins before having to relight. Ahhhh, much much better.

Rod, I found a decent link on how to pack it 'properly', although Shadow and Firestorms suggestions worked like a charm too. If your interested, clickety click the link below:
