Today, on Aug. 14, 1945, President Truman announced that Japan had surrendered unconditionally, ending World War II.

The town of Plainfield, CT still holds a "VJ Day" Parade every year. They usually hold it on the second Sunday in August and it kicks off at 1:01 p.m., the exact time that the Japanesse signed the surrender treaty on August 15, 1945. The parade is a huge event here in eastern Connecticut and usually draws a crowd of up to 40,000 people. :0

Although VJ day was on Aug 14, today is the anniversary of the last surface action ot WWII. Two USN officered Chinese junks fought a Japanese junk off the China coast.
