This is a whine-post that I feel compelled to make, so here is your chance to hit the back button on your browser now...

That said - one of the *best* things about are little community here (IMO) is the lack of political talk and how quickly it is/can be squelched. However, I have been very disturbed at the proliferation of political sigs. For me, at least, I get enough of this in news, radio and other media without seeing hundreds of Presidential banners when I'm trying to relax and browse my favorite on-line site - CP.

This is just a gentleman's call to all CPers to leave that at the door - if you can. No need to post polical slogan pics in your avatars here of all places. Can't we all just be BOTLs ithout broadcasting very personal choices all over the place. I doubt having a little spam banner snippet in your sig will change anyone's vote, so why bother.

Please.

I'm not trying to change anyone's vote, it's something I'm proud to have in my sig tag just like anyone else so tough $hit until such time that a rule in put in place that forbids it. Do you think that the Michigan fans who have the ole maize & blue in their avatars and/or sig tags are going to make the OSU fans switch their allegiances?

Politics is my vocation and my hobby just like sports are for some and cars are for others.

Many members post all kinds of personal perferences on these boards from certain alcoholic beverages, certain sports teams, what they like to do with their spare time and so forth.

For instance, I'm a Green Bay Packers fan. Now I know The Beast would love to strangle me for my choice of which pro football team I root for but we both love cigars and like pro football so we share a common interest. I like Jaguars and Psyktek likes Saabs. I don't like Saabs but we share a common interest in cars which is great.

Is it okay for Michigan fans to show their pride in their Wolverines but not okay for me to "root" for a candidate? I don't see the OSU fans whinning and crying to Rod to ban all references to which college footbal team you support. If you ask me, the banter in some of those threads gets a heck of a lot more dicey than any political topics around here since the request to refrain from political discussion was added to the description of "The Lobby"

I can barely tell scotch from Irish Whiskey or bourbon but I very much enjoy AVB's knowledge of the subject and appreciate his contributions to this board on a subject that I can learn from.

Politics is part of life especially with less than three months to go before a U.S. presidential election. Don't tell me this is the only place where you are exposed to people's political opinions because as far as cigar boards go, this is one has by far the least amount of references to it.

Maybe I should remove the Union Jack from my sig tag too. Don't want to offend people who like American cars or those who may think I'm "unamerican." Oh yeah, I gotta get rid of the cat too before I piss off the dog owners  Oh yeah, non-PC jokes like the quote in my sig tag are probably a no-no too, huh?

Maybe CP should ban Avatars and sig tags all together, how about that ??? God knows who will be offended by whatever.

Get over it.....

I agree somewhat with CCat on this one, the forum/chat rules/etiquette page says nothing about politics. At the same time, it's easy to see how if someone calls the president a moron or Kerry a "flip-flopper" that good vibes about cigars and friendship could become strained. I don't talk politics here at CP and in certain social situations due to that very reason. I have nothing wrong with CCat's Bush/Cheney logo, and some folks have good Kerry/Edwards stuff-it's when you follow the next step and put stuff that attacks a given candidate that people begin to take things personally and feel attacked on a site. I'm rather mixed on this issue, I see both sides of it--but I don't believe by any means we are at a crisis point here. I assume this post has something to do with ree-ree robusto's signature? I'm a liberal democrat and I thought it was rather amusing myself. I PM'd him and told him so. We are all grown adults here, I don't come to this site to look at people's signatures(unless they're of hot chicks) I come for the discussion of cigars and life in general in the lobby. I've had a great time here, and I'm learning a heck of a lot. I say let's just live with it for the time being and see how things go.

I like AVB's sig pics too!! :p :D

I looked all over for a Nader sig tag but I had to settle for the next best :p
I will have to see if I can find something for Nader CC.

If we can't use candidate logos I will have to find something that displays how much I dislike that fata$$ retard Michael Moore. He is an idiot, he's not a candidate, his "movie" doesn't have to be claimed by Mr. Kerry as political advertisement; so it isn't politics, right? :sign:

Matt

Not that my opinion is more important (it is but that's for another time :p ) but I don't mind the sigs that show support for whatever candidate floats your boat. However, the ones that are anti the other guy (whomever that may be) don't reflect the "friendly" portion of this community.

I served under every President from Nixon to GWB and have an opinion of them all but I don't think you want to read about it on a cigar board.

Whatever AVB's sig-tag lady in running for, she has my vote!!! :D

I forgot I had sigs turned off until I read this thread....I was like, "WHAT sig tags?"

There ya go treamayne, My Controls, Options, Board Setings, and when you see this: "Do you wish to view members signatures when reading topics?" change it from "Yes" to "No" and psyktek, txmatt, ree ree robusto and I (pretty much the only four out of over 1200 members here) will no longer be offending you ;)

That isn't reasonable either. Why shouldn't he read the other 800 sigs just to turn you off. Not that he turns you on :0 :p but you never know. :p

This board could use a little spice. What better than a never ending thread of political debate and flame wars? I do expect some level of entertainment here. As a spectator I'd love nothing more than to watch an election topic thread burst into all out kaos. What do I care if you guys piss each other off beyond repair? It would be complete pleasure to watch people destroy relationships on this board over the simple talk of politics. I mean this would be frickin hilarious!!! Damn...the more I think about it...the more I want to see it.

I gotta run....PM Rod....I'm sure I can talk him into letting this happen. Afterall the last Mike Tyson fight was such a disappoinment....this could be the next BIG bout.

Cigar weekly and other sites have a politics and non-cigars section-I don't see why we couldn't open a thread for those who were interested in discussing that stuff to do so. In looking at CW, I don't see it boiling over into cigar discussions. It's kind of hard to go from talking about robustos to John Edwards on a non-political line of discussion. :p

On the other hand, a discussion about cigars could always come round to our former leader Mr. Clinton! ;) But I would hate to relive how HE violated a nice quality cigar! :0

Karl, I respect your right to have an opinion on any issue, and would agree with you, but I think Bill has a good point that right now is the hight of the American tradition of electing our leader.

Please hang in there until November, Im sure these political tags will go away after the election.

I just wonder what ring gauge it was :D Probably a 60plus, maybe it was a Puros Indios?

i disagree. the whole reason that option exists is so that people can put whatever they want on their sigs and avatars (by the way, there's an option to turn off avatars too!) and others don't have to be offended.

If he doesn't like them, then he can either live with it or turn them off. Same choice i have - usually off so I can check out the site at work during lunch.

I hate the anti-bush stuff and the pro Kerry stuff, but I'm not going to complain about it.
