k guys.... I recently picked up the engagement ring for my girlfriend (few weeks ago, holding off to throw off the scent of jewelry), but I'm at a loss as to how to pop the question. My original idea was to go to Windows on the World, but since 9/11, that idea isn't ever going to see the light of day :(

Your mission, if you choose to accept it is to come up with an idea. If your comfortable, tell your story, I know some of you guys are married a while, so you've got to have some surprises up yer sleeves.

Oh, and I'm going to send out a nice 'Thank You' package for the idea I steal.. er, I mean borrow. Not going to give it away, but it's going to be a nice little 5-7 cigar package.

Oh and Dawn, since your a woman, I'd like your input too, ladies usually have some excellent ideas for this sort of thing :p

Thanks and I look forward to reading some of your ideas

I've always been partial to the suitor riding up on horseback(Meet her in a park in your part of the world) dismount, hat in hand, dressed to the nine's, and ask her for her hand.

But then again, my handle is....

Horse

to be the moste creative I would have to know what she likes to do. Sports? Entertainment events? Concerts? Bands?

If you can post some of the things you like doing together (within reason) it would make these Ideas fit a bit better.

Dooood, did you see my post on the Ice Cream deal? I thought it was great. Or in the bottom of a wine glass at a "Very Nice" restaurant. But be sure and hit one kneww as soon as she discovers the gold!!!

Horse, I love that idea, and would do it, but Fran is afraid of animals. I have 2 birds and a rabbit, and she's just getting used to them LOL.

PB, I like the ice cream idea... Might have to think more on that one... I spent a good amount for the ring and I don't want her eating it :p

Matt.... Matt... Man oh man. If I could score the big screen, that'd be awesome.

Let's see, Fran like dancing, finer things (whatever that is :p) movies, my cooking, hmmm, she likes me :p

That help?

Hmmm, your cookin huh? Well...let me see....think think :0 Got it, cook that ring into a burger...No WAIT!!! Q: you got her on your dental policy yet? :D

Out here in the Wine Valley the local Vinyards will actually type the label YOU want on the bottle of wine.  Imagine your favorite restaurant. You order a bottle of wine to accompany your dinner........the label of the bottle says "marry me Fran".  ( Or use your imagination) The bottle would be a legacy, and you could buy a case of 12.....so each anniversary you could open yet another bottle with " HER" label.. reaffirming what you had agreed on years ago!  :D

* If you actually want to do this let me know..  I have 7 wineries within 30 miles of me, and Delicato, whom I KNOW does private labeling 1.2 miles down the road.  I go to their grape stomps each year :)*

Firestorm... I forgot you live in my old area... I know it's not close, but is Woodbridge near you? Bobby Mondavi used to do this sort of thing from time to time (I did a contract for him for a week and he partially paid me with a case of wine)..

Hmmm.. I like that idea a lot.

PB, um... I'm really scared of the whole cook something with the ring in it. LOL, I already took out insurance on it.

Oh I know, just being a smartass again. Sorry

Truthfully though, I was thinking about cooking something in it, but sometimes Fran's a bit absent minded. I'm really afraid she'd break her teeth, or swallow it, or not even realize what was going on. LOL. She's an analyst for a living, so when she turns off, she really turns off :p

I want to do something creative, but classy. And since I'm neither :p I figured I'd turn to the masters *cough cough cough sucking up cough cough* :D :D :0

Tony not sure about Mondavi... I know we have Delicato, Beringer, Sutter homes,Corbet Canyon...( My wife works at Nestles, where they have their warehouse), and another 12 about 45 minutes west in Napa Valley. Bottom line is that Delicato does about 90 percent of the grape processing for th e valley. ( Ie. Most smaller growers bring their grapes to Delicato for processing and aging an then take them back for bottling..

Delicato created a " dessert type" wine for their daughter ( who loved sweet wines), called Sweet Marie, which was a blend of their best noted top sweet wines. IN particular they relabel this blend all of the time...! Anyways let me know if you want me to look into some specifics for you.

FS, you know what? You are correct sir! LOL. Being the snob I am, I know exactly what yer talkin about. Delicato is THE place for wines.

If it's not too much trouble, could you look into how, and who I would need to contact?

Oh and as for yer wife's place of employment? One word comes to mind...

YUM!

Did the tour a while back. I was like a little kid in um, a candy warehouse :p

Gladly brother... Will check out tomorrow morning. I should have an answer by Sunday/ Monday at the latest!

Since she likes movies, see if one of the theatres will put a special message on the screen for you. I know the local theatres around here do that, I had them do one for Valentine Day for my wife last year. :D

I don't have much experience asking women to marry me. I only did it once and she accepted, scared the crap out of me. Now 34 years later no regrets.
I would take a direct approach. A fine meal you've made. Candles. A bottle of wine. Then do the deed. Tell her you love her and want to spend the rest of your life with her. It worked for me, should for you.

Oh no rush Fireguy :p I'm nervous enough as it is LOL

When I popped the ? my wife had no idea I would do it. I asked her father for his blessing (a practice not done enough today) this she appreciated after she found out and it made it easier to mooch money for the ceremony since he said ok LOL anyhoo, I took my wife hiking at a state park brought lunch etc and took her up on a mountain and just popped the question easy as that!
Top it off with that bottle of wine Firestorm suggested and split the prize between us ROTFLOL
Just do it special and after she says yes stand back and let her go (planing the wedding etc) its all out of your hands after that

Tony:

I visited Delicato today. The way it works is like this. They have 2 label styles for you to choose from. The cost for the specially printed lables is $1.00 each with a minimum order of 10 lables. You do NOT have to buy that many bottles of wine. They will bottle and apply the label to as many bottles as you choose to order with no minimum. You pay then $10.00 for the 10 lables (and $1.00 for each additional one.

Then you select the text you want on the label. When you see the label samples you will understand how this works. As soon as I get your email addy I will send you the sample lables to look at.

Then you select which wine you want to order. (You have to keep to the same varietal because they will print the legally required information on the bottom of the label.) This infomation is the contents of the bottle (wine variety), the state of origen (California), and the alcohol %.

After you order the labels they take one week to print. At that time the wine is bottled and your private reserve label applied. If you only order 1 or 2 bottles they will send you your other 8 or 9 printed lables. There is a lot to be said though for buying a case, and opening another bottle each year to reaffirm the commitment! ;)

One last note on this. They ship to 13 states directly from the winery. (Yours is not one of the states, so if you do this I will have to pick up your order and mail it for you.) Let me know your thinking and if I can help.
