...are in order for the Newman family (of J.C. Newman Cigar Co.).

Eric Newman posted over in the CF Clubhouse Room earlier that his dad, Stanford, is gravely ill. "Dad Needs Your Prayers" is the thread title.

Looks like the end of an era in the cigar business may be near.

I'm sure the family could use kind thoughts during a really tough time.

Here is the family's statement, posted on another board:

August 17, 2006, Tampa, FL – It is with great sorrow and heavy hearts that the J.C. Newman Cigar Company announces the passing of its beloved leader and our father, Stanford J. Newman. Surrounded by our family, Dad died a peaceful death after experiencing a cardiac arrest while working at the office this past Tuesday.

Not only will Dad long be remembered as a giving person in life, his generosity after his death will save another’s life. Dad’s liver is being donated to a patient in critical need. At a time of deep sadness, this uplifting gift of life brings comfort to our family.

Starting with the company in 1934 and having just celebrated his 90th birthday in June, not only was Dad the oldest cigar man in the business, but was an industry icon as well. As Chairman of the Board, Dad continued to work everyday and oversaw every aspect of our Tampa-based cigar manufacturing operation.

Loved by all who knew him, Dad was a leader, a mentor and a visionary who will be truly missed. He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Elaine; his sons, Eric and Bobby; and his three grandsons Drew, Dawson and Paxton.

A funeral service is planned for 1:30 Sunday afternoon at Congregation Schaarai Zedek, at 3303 W. Swann Ave in Tampa. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation, P.O. Box 76246, Tampa, Florida 33675 or the Elaine Newman Scholarship Fund at Berkeley Preparatory School, 4811 Kelly Rd., Tampa, Florida 33615.

This saddens me.
Will smoke a Stanford Cameroon tomorrow in his honor, my favorite cigar right now and NOT how I wanted to break into my stash.

I have had the pleasure of meeting him. He also took the time to visit my store and autograph his book for me.
