Has any one here been to Puerto Rico? I just bought airfare to go there in January with my girlfriend. Her old boss has a place there and has given us an open invite to use it for the last year or so. Finally took him up on it. I'm excited but know nothing of the island, its history, or what to do. Any input would be huge! Thanks.

I travel to San Juan about every three months or so for business. I was there just a few weeks ago worked for a couple of days and them my wife and I took a cruise out of San Juan. I really enjoy going down there, plenty to do, beach, casinos, good food, fishing, ect. Old San Juan is fun. There are alot of really old churches and two forts you can go see. You can also take a tour of the Barcardi plant. I haven't done that yet but I want to. Here is a link, I'm sure you can find more. http://www.topuertorico.org/city/sanjuan.shtml
Oh yea, there is a smoke shop inside the El San Juan Hotel and Casino, and Thursday through Saturday they have a roller on site.
Hope this helps

Awesome, thanks.

I was there in september 2001 got to stay an extra week we were suposed to fly home on the 11th. The Bacardi factory is nice they usually give ya a couple free drinks. the beaches are great and el junke may have mis spelled that is great it is thier national park wich is a rain forest. Old san Juan is nice but a bit expensive I dont know if you fish but i caught a seven foot tarpon on a charter behind the bacardi factory. Bring some shoes you can wear in the ocean so that you do not step on a sea urchin or ray make sure they have heal straps or they will float away. I remember it as being one of the nicest vacations me or the wife has ever had. Oh yeah don't park under a coconut tree I did this by mistake with our rental car and found a dent in the hood when we returned. just remembered Ponce on the caribian side is a must see beutiful blue water and white beaches definately worth the trip.

I have been to Puerto Rico a couple times - very fun place. El Yunque, the rainforest previously mentioned, is probably a 45-60 minute drive from the resort area of San Juan. My first time to Puerto Rico, I went with my parents, and I definitely did not want to drive out to the rainforest. I am very glad they did as it was one of the neatest places I have ever been. Make sure to bring your camera and comfortable shoes. There are trails all around, and even places where you can swim (waterfalls, swimming holes, etc.)

Old San Juan is very neat. A couple nice small smoke shops scattered through the area. Plenty of nice, small restaurants to grab dinner and drinks in.

Plaza de los Americas is also something like the largest mall south of the United States. If you were to hit up the smoke shop in the El San Juan Hotel, the mall could be a good place for your girlfriend to enjoy during that time. ;)

Old San Juan is a great place to go, just keep your girlfriend away from all of the jewelry shops. They have more jewelry shops for such a small town. There are many historical places to visit while in Old San Juan, the already mentioned forts, plus the churches and the old el Convento that is now a hotel. There is also a cigar shop that sells there own cigars named Don Collins they are a pretty good cigar for the price and the people there are super friendly.

The Bacardi plant is a must see the tour is worth the drive out there. The island has golf courses galore if you are into that and the fishing is top notch. Local cuisine features seafood and much more, be adventurous and try some of local dishes. There is a great night life in San Juan plus casinos so you shouldn't be bored and there is nothing like laying out on the sand and taking a dip in the ocean.

Enjoy

Awesome. Thanks everyone for the input. If you got any more ideas, keep them coming. I am very interested to see the rain forest, and Old San Juan. Its hard to pass up a distillery tour as well. Heck, the Jack Daniel's distillery is in the middle of nowhere and I drove 4 hours out of my way to get there. Thanks for the input again.
