Question about raises...

It has been almost a year and a half since my last raise. Is a raise something I should have to sit down and ask for every year or am I being unrealistic thinking I deserve one every year? What is the average time you have had between raises at your job? How long would you wait before telling the boss you are moving on?
 
I haven't worked anywhere that didn't have a semi-annual or annual review process. If you go into your boss and ask for a raise then have your performance points all lined up. i.e. what have you done to make the company better.
 
i get a raise every quarter through my company, if there is no complaints or anything by quarter i mean every 3 monthes
 
Every 6 months to a year. I wouldn't threaten your boss with leaving to get a raise, often times I will call their bluff. Like AVB says get your sales pitch together and sell yourself, then if rejected consider your options.

You should be able to get a raise every day. If not, you should look into picking up some little blue pills. Once you get the raise, if it lasts more than four hours, you should call the doctor.

Almost all public sector employees get one or two raises a year. The private sector is completely different and there are way too many factors that figure into whether or not they offer raises.

The bottom line is it's YOUR choice to either stay and accept your employer's rules or move on to another job. I don't necessarily buy into the thought that anyone DESERVES a raise, it's really up to the policy makers of your employer to decide that. Again, if their practices are unacceptable to you then you should move on.
 
How is the company you work for doing financially? Typically you should expect a review yearly and ideally a raise based upon the review. In my last job it had been three years w/o a raise or review, they were doing very poorly. My new job gave me a small raise after only three months.
 
My company has an annual review process. Generally if a raise is due, you will get it at that time. The only other circumstance would be if you change job classifications.

I work for the state so I recieve a raise every year. also get a cost of living raise some years. Most other jobs I have had though I had to request the raise when I felt I deserved it.
 
You can be subtle about it and ask when the reviews are going to be or be upfront about it and ask why you haven't received your raise yet.

Either way you probably will get lipservice.

Do you work for a large company or a small one? Go to your HR dept. and ask what the deal is about your wage review.
 
I have to agree with AVB and CC on their points. If you have to ask for a review/raise, have your accomplishments documented and be able to present them. On the other hand, I don't believe anyone should be entiled to an automatic raise because of passing time. A raise, just like respect, should be earned.

And it is very difficult to focus after reading Wasy's posts. I was going to say "very hard" but figured I would catch some crap.

Well I feel that yearly raised are needed if for no other reason than to counter inflation. If you make 15 dollars an hour this year it has more buying power than next year. It just makes sense to at least give inflation raises to workers.
