I am very new to smoking cigars, but I am starting to experiment a little bit. I was wondering if one should light up a cigar if they know that they do not have the time to finish it. Basically is it bad to only smoke a portion of a cigar and then put it out and save the rest for later? How long will it keep if it has already smoked part of the way?

I accidentally put this in the wrong section so it prolly needs to be moved

Welcome to CP, I suggest you go to the Introduction forum and post an introduction. In answer to your question, it is OK to relight one later, but the taste tends to get bitter and nasty. I personally will not relight a cigar if it has sat for more than 1/2 hour.

Relighting any cigar that has "gone cold" will produce a very nasty taste. Its ill advised.

Buy some petit corona's or similar smaller sized cigars for those times you only have 20-30 minutes to smoke.

<someone moved this thread as I was typing...>

If you have to do this, or even if you're looking to relight a cigar that's gone out, purge it before you relight it. Blow out through the cigar and get rid of all of that "old" smoke. I've found that this makes the relight more enjoyable and tends to get rid of that bitter, nasty taste the other guys are talking about.

It's good advice to find some smaller cigars you like, too, so you don't have to do this, though. :)

Thanks for the tips, this has been something I was wondering about as well. One of my family friends used to sing the praises of cigar and how you could relight cigars hours later. He never told me about the bitter taste, but luckily I am learning now and haven't had to experience it.

When I have to relight I first purge the cigar, then to light it I don't initially puff on it to get it going. I hold the cigar above the flame constantly rotating it until it lights. It may take longer this way than to puff on it while lighting, but I find it helps avoid some of that bitter stale cigar taste.

This may be wierd... I haven't heard of anyone else doing it, but ... if I'm going to be relighting a cigar I actually cut the end off (the ash end) after it goes out. This way I have a fresh foot to relight. I think this also helps to get rid of some of that bitter taste.

Hell I relight all the time. The first couple of puff are a little bitter if I forget to clear the cigar by blowing through it to clear out the smoke before I set it down for awhile. After a min or so I can hardley tell its been sittin for awhile. I won't relight after a couple hrs.

my girlfriends dad loves to smoke a cigar over and over and over, no matter how many relights, that and he can't stop rolling the ash off the end of it, which really makes a mess all over the table on the patio with the smallest breeze.

I rarely relight a cigar, if I do I purge before I put it down and before I relight.

X2. I can't do a relight. Nasty. Blech. Find some good smaller sticks for such occasions. The AF Short Story is a miracle worker for the time crunch. The Don Pepin Black Especial is also great. Those sticks are out there, you just have to find the ones that suit you. There's also many cigars that I love in a larger size, and have got no love for the smaller.
