I can grab a 12 bottle wine cooler for cheap, 40 bucks.

I have never had more than 50 cigars, but I'm fearing the heat messing with my sticks, as we never run the A/C.

I figured this would be a good size, seeing as I've never even had a box, and it'd be a good temp solution to get me through the summer or until i have the funds to get a big one, then I can sell this one off.

For $40? I'd say go for it as long as it's in good condition....and works! But uh.....GO BIGGER! :D Just had to say it mang.
 
Hell Yeah! At worst you can use it to chill some bottles of wine for the honeys after you get a bigger humi!

Okay, I bought it. it was 50 not 40, my bad, misread the ad. Anyways, its in perfect shape and is holding temp just fine. It could easily hold 3 full sized boxes, I have 2 in it right now and about a half pond of beads, gonna let the boxes soak up the humidity. Sweet, I have a wine coolerdor underway

Congrats bro!! Great pick up...and you won't miss the $10, what is it less than 3 gallons of gas for your Jeep :laugh: (you can read into that more as me being pissed off at gas prices LOL). I really wish I could do the wineodor, but my parents are smoke nazi's so I have to keep the cigars out of sight...wine-o-dor wouldn't be out of sight....best thing I got is my GF's basement for a good portion of my collection LOL. I can't wait too see your pix bro!

I got about 200 miles to this last tank...so thats not too bad...17mpg ish...just filled up for 50 bucks ...

anyways, pictures are from my phone because i keep my digi cam at work...dammit.

as you can see, it'll hold about 60 cigars, in boxes, probably wayyyy more if i just made 1 or 2 singles trays, rather than relying on boxes.

I'm just using the rack to hold the boxes separate so the beads are in the middle

Looks good, I've been thinking of getting one also, but I'm going to hold out for a larger one.

It's not deep enough to turn the boxes long way front to back? Just thinking you could fit MORE in there. :D

If it is as warm as you say it is in your house, you will need to do something like this:

otherwise you will have dry beads and a pool of water at the bottom of the cooler in about 2 weeks.

P.s. the metal racks will eventually rust on you- luaun wood can be found for 4 bucks a sheet.

I am thinkin' about some way to contain all of this effectively. I cant just put a dish at the bottom, as that will remove the surface for the boxes, unless i just set a rack on top of it.

Whats luan?

Also, there's nowhere to have it drip to or from, the fan and peltier plate assembly take up the whole back mostly. Should I maybe line it with something to help it retain moisture? Build an inside "box" out of wood perhaps?

Luaun is a mohagany, very similar in nature to cedar. As for the condensation, you could also just use a mesh bead bag and tuck it in the back to absorb any falling moisture from the peltier plate..
 
should I season it without running the cooling element? Or just let it rum, while full of beads/boxes for like a week or 2?
 
DR.

Dont run the unit while seasoning. You will never get to the RH where you need to be. The humidity does drop when the unit cycles, so it would counteract the seasoning process. Good luck. Very nice unit!!!

If it doesn't have a wooden interior you don't need to season it. The boxes may soak up some moisture for a couple of days, but they'll level out eventually. Put the boxes in empty until everything stabilizes in a couple of days if your worried about the cigars, but I'd just put my cigars in the boxes, get my beads set up, and turn it on and let it work. I wouldn't open it for a few days while everything was stabilizing.
 
With the boxes?

Seasoning involves letting the interior of your humidor adsorb enough moisture to hold the humidity stable. A plastic lined cooler doesn't need any seasoning. The plastic will not adsorb anything.

Like I said, if you're concerned about the cigars, put the boxes in there empty and let everything stabilize effectively seasoning the empty boxes. If these are boxes that have been in a humidor environment (already "seasoned" then put your cigars in the boxes and put them in the cooler. The boxes should buffer the humidity level of the cigars just fine.
 
Right, i know about the plastic.

I have in it, at the moment, 2 LGC boxes with the tops cut off, so they're just like trays wrapped in paper, and 1 ashton VSG box, none of which have been in a humided environment recently. They are what im referring to seasoning. They need to soak up the moisture, i presume. If i put the cigars in there...they'd suck the moisture out of the cigars, no?
