Interesting, but I can't say that I'm really surprised. I'd like to see the same study done with cigars. I bet you'd see about the same thing really.

BTW, this doesn't always work out this way. I've been to a number of tastings, with oenophiles, where somebody tries to sneak in a 2 Buck Chuck in with the higher end Cabs and they have never scored at the top, once in a while one will score in the middle but never on top. The last big surprise at a tasting was a middle of the road Cab, ~$35, which scored higher than most of the higher end wines at $80+. I did pick up a case of this wine for the cellar.

If I'm drinking a rather expensive wine or smoking a rather pricey cigar I'm indeed suprised and glad when it delivers.

But when I know what a wine/cigar is and what I paid for it, I'm much more judgemental than with a cheapo that delivers above and beyond what I expected for what I paid. There are alot of wines/cigars that are really expensive that are just crap, but have a good marketing dept. or a cult following or have relied on a rare issue to carry them as far as they can, while the current stock is completely subpar. Also doing wine tastings is tough as every bottle is different, unless they had QC from bottling to taste sampling there can be extreme differences in quality from bottle to bottle. Anyone who buys wine in bulk(bevmo .5c sale) knows you can get off bottles.

Either way, I'm not paying $100 for a bottle of wine.

Well you are indeed in close proximity to some of the best wine regions in the world and you can find many very nice California wines for great prices.

I don't have enough experience with wine to really enjoy the high end stuff. Who knows, maybe someday....

Right now though, I'm on a scotch kick and I'll tell ya there IS a difference between the $50.00 and the $250.00 bottles. I'm not sure if it's five times better in taste but it's definitely noticably better.

Right on, Bill. I find that all products are like this. There are high quality, less expensive wines, scotches, cigars, etc., that are much better than their equally priced competitors. There are also extraordinary, top-of-the-line examples, which cost a premium. The good but inexpensive examples will never be as good as the good expensive ones, for if they were, their cost would rise to match. If you only consider quality products to begin with, the costlier ones will generally be noticeably better for this reason. However, there are diminishing returns, and one must take personal preference into account. And never forget that just as Audi said, while there are a lot of crappy cheap wines, whiskies, and smokes, there are also a lot of crappy expensive ones! :sign:
