I think it is the South Carolina Stae Flag. Palmetto and weird as it may seem, that isn't a crescent Moon. I can't remember what it was supposed to be, I think it was something to do with Pirates.

I'm pretty sure that is the SC flag. However, I thought the question was about BMOC's avatar. I was guessing a close up of the heart or some other organ as you can see the blood vessels on it.

And BMOC I'm just a noob and even I can smell trouble in the amount of posts/ horrible typing and incoherent (and I usually screw things up). I always use spell check, and when I forget to I try to immediately edit the post before I "look the fool". Be cool and slow it up or be prepared for what the older members dish out. I'm just giving a decent warning. Add mine to the growing list.
 
I'm guessing it's a close up of a tobacco leaf. Perhaps with some interesting backlighting to make the "veins" stand out more.
