After spending the weekend at my Sisters house and seeing their yard, I want a Mclane reel mower. My bro-in-law has one and his lawn is immaculate, reminds me of a putting green. Here is a pic:

Just wondering if any of you have one and if you like it or not. If you have another brand, what is it. I've found a used one here in Tulsa on Ebay, currently $75. Will finally own a lawn at the end of the month and am wondering if they are worth it.
 
They work great for the "Golf Green" look but the species of grass has a lot to do with it as well. They are generally used to cut the TIF species of grass.

yeah, those work the best on bermuda grass or tif as you called it. i don't think st. augustine grass would like it so much. but the best advice i can give is to start it out at it's highest setting and work your way down to see how your grass handles it.

what kind of grass is in your yard?
 
you can cut down to an 1/8" with one of those babies if i am not mistaken. bermuda grass is not soft like a blue grass is, very rough texture to it.

Yea, for now we do, if the temperature stays in the 100s like the past few days the grass won't stay green for long, unless you have a sprinkler system and are not under a ration. ???
 
I have Bonsai Fescue in the front and rear yards and they are just beautiful right now! Freebern, I use a mulching, rear bagging mower and it works just fine. I also just replaced the blade which has made a huge difference.

So, is the house a fixer upper? I'm a nut for doing home remodeling. I'm at about 85% complete with my current remodel which affected about 80% of the house. Added on about 500 sq. feet with a total kitchen remodel, and all new landscape. My Fiance and I did most of the work ourselves and played the GC roll for the entire project.

If you're gonna mulch it, why bag it? Unless ya got a compost pile going out back. :thumbs:
 
I have a McLane 3hp, 10 blade w/ rear drive and love it. My grass is called Z3... it's a zoysia/bermuda hybrid and works great on it. I mow every other week in the spring/summer and once a month the rest of the year and the blades need to be sharpened once a year. Very reliable and excellent performance.

Thanks Wade, glad to see you're still around.

David, the house isn't really a fixer upper. I'd like to replace the kitchen counter tops and cabinets. I'll be adding a covered porch sometime soon, so we can use the hot tub during the rain or snow. I'm also wanting to redo the landscaping. It was built in 1979, original owners, new stucco, new A/C, roof, carpet, tile, etc etc. We got a dam* good deal and I couldn't pass it up. It's also down the street from my wifes best friend, so she won't be wasting gas during the day driving back and forth.
 
It's good to see folks enjoy making their houses nicer as much as I do!

That reel mower looks real nice! My mulching mower seems to do a fairly nice job, especially since I have no where to put clipping if I were to bag them. And I mow about every 5-6 days right now otherwise it gets out of control!

You know, I've always been very confused about the whole mulching thing. When I acquired this mower it was used, had a rear bagger and stamped on the deck that it is a mulching mower. I've always used a bag, so I just continue to do so, I can't imagine mulching all of those clippings back into the lawn. Our city also has a recycling program for yard clippings so that makes it easy too.
