retirement gift ideas

Greeting CigarPass Community,

This is going to sound very noobish, but alas.. I don't know very much about cigars, so if I could get some advice, that would be great.

My office's current supervisor is retiring in a couple weeks and he currently smokes those 65 cent La Finca cigars that come in an ammo box. We'd like to take about $60 and get him a better quality smoke for those long boring years of retirement. :)

Presentation would be nice to go along w/ the cigars (I know, I'm asking alot right?), so the no label JRs or likewise won't do.

So, anyone bored enough to wanna shoot me some ideas?

Well, to be honest it's going to be tough to do much along the lines of quality with only $60. However, if you stretched your budget a tiny bit here's a few things that would be pretty good.

A box of Padron 2000 Maduros here

Then get the cheapest humidor on this page.

Those two together would be a decent presentation and a very good tasting cigar.

Over your budget I know, but pretty good deal.
 
Just realized that you'd most likely have to back order the 2000's at TNT.

Thinking about it, Brickhouse's suggestion is probably your best bet. There aren't many decent cigars for that price unless you want to get a bundle of seconds, but seconds don't come banded. The Padron's will look good on there own but a cheap humidor will really help make them look classy.

Along with the cigars, point him to this website, it's great for any cigar smoker. :thumbs:
 
Jeremy, I should also add that the Padron 2000's come in a wooden box that is presentable in and of itself. It's just that the humidor would really give it that bling :)
 
You could also go here and buy the 4 5 packs for $66 Padron 2000's
And here for the humidor for $20 Humidor

Still a little over budget but you'll get him some good cigars for a good price.
 
Find a local shop where you are that sells Arturo Fuente products. Get a humibag and some sungrown Chateau Fuentes.

This would be my alternative to the Padron 2000s, and a damn good smoke as well. You can get the Padrons for a bit cheaper than the Sungrown Fuentes, but it all depends on where you go to get them.
 
AVB/Ray makes a great suggestion. Those are some damn tasty cigars. But, it made me realize that I was assuming you wanted to get/gift a "full box" of sticks. If you aren't exactly set on that, the possibilities really increase.

One option in the non-full box that comes to mind, especially for a La Finca smoker looking to step up a bit, would be this:

Also, for a sampler of sticks, these boys put together a pretty good package of various sticks that will probably appeal to your gift recipient, allow him to try out various ones he may like (or learn which ones he dislikes), and will come from one of the finest tobacconists around:

Plenty of good suggestion here. One thing I will add is that you make sure that your retiree cares to smoke something other than what he normally smokes. He may love those 65 cent La Finca cigars that come in an ammo box.

I had a buyer that smoked King Edwards and I decided to give him a box of Fuente Cuban Belicosa's for Christmas one year. When he open the box he politely told me that if I liked them it would be best for me to keep them as he would never smoke em.... he only smoked King Edwards. Go figure.

I'd like to thank those of you who threw their 2 cents in.

I figured that you guys should get an update on what i decided to go with.

I ordered the padron 2000's from cigary.com, then i noticed their shipping policy under their FAQ (they don't ship to CA, or so i thought), and since i didn't get a confirmation email, I just disregarded that purchase.

So back to my search I decided to go with the nat sherman metropolitans from cigarsinternational that came w/ the free ashtray (which arrives on wednesday, perfect timing).

So saturday i get a package and it's the cigary.com cigars, but it's a 25 box of padron 5000 maduros. (I looked those up and i guess it's a $110 box of cigars) for $70 bucks. So I got a pretty good deal out of it for myself as well.
