Just a quick note..... not sure if I'm leaving or staying yet but we're ready for a quick exit in the morning if needed. So far all of the new reports are pushing this storm to the east of us and if we end up on what they call the dry side of the storm we're staying.

Keeping everyone up to date on auction MO's semt to me..... I've posted everything received so far. If you sent me a MO and its not posted on your auction thread that I received it then it has not got here. We did not get any mail service today and won't get any for the next couple days because of this storm. Don't know how long we'll get knocked out of power but I'll resurface and post an update after this bad girl gets out of here if I can.

Side note - guess who called me yesterday to ask if there was anything they could do to help me and my family. Yep, Billie and Alex, the family we've been helping. Talk about coming full circle.

Kenny, keep safe down there! Kind of ironic that this one is heading to the area that most of the Katrina victoms were relocated to....geez!

Billy and Alex are good people!

Thanks everyone we appreciate the prayers.

Looks like we're going to sit tight and hold on. The storm has moved more to the east. We'll still get nailed but we're now on the drier side of the storm. The bad news is Louisianna is going to get hammered again. Those guys just can't catch a break.

The winds are starting to pick up just a wee bit here.... just enough to let us know its coming. Expecting to lose electric sometime this afternoon or tonight.... sure am going to hate losing the AC but I suppose if thats as bad as it gets we're in good shape.

The spookiest part is walking outside... its like we're in a ghost town. We have about a dozen people, if that, left in our whole subdivision.

Actually I'm bored silly waiting..... maybe I'll go mow the lawn. :D

Funny you would say that....I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who lives close to me here. He's a fellow cigar smoker and was calling to check in with us and tell me he and the wife are on the road to Oklahoma.

After I got off the phone I told my wife if we decided we had to leave I'd have to go to their house and rescue his cigars. When he got back in town in a few days I'd just shake my head.... look at him and say..... damn, looters huh :whistling: ;)

Kenny,

Please be careful.

At the moment Rita borders between a Category 3 and a Category 4.
The eye is about 50 miles wide, and then hurricane-force winds extend another 85 miles or so and the tropical storm-force winds will extend another 205 miles.

How far is Houston from Port Arthur?

:sign:

We ain't got no hurrikans hur in Oklahoma. Ya'lls welcome to come on up.

Just got off the phone with my brother, who lives in Houston with his family.

He told me that it took him 18 hours to drive what normally takes 4 hours to my parent's house, and he avoided all the interstates and stuck with back roads! He said it was a total mess. Cars getting sideswiped, people abandoning vehicles... :0

Also a buddy of mine who also lives in Houston (and who turned around and went home rather than face that nightmare) told me that a friend of his was on the highway -- bumper to bumper and not moving -- when some guy tapped on his driver's side window with a gun wanting to move his car in front of his!

It's unbelieveable and crazy to imagine everything going on down there right now. And I live in Austin (a measly 3+ hours away), where there's no bottled water in the grocery stores and gas stations are emptying their gas pumps!

Insanity. Good luck to all those either staying or trying to get out!!!

Combination of things made me decide to stay put. Current predictions is for the storm to make landfall around Beaumont/Port Orange. Thats about a 100 miles to the east of me putting us on the dry side of the storm. This will also soften the winds quite a bit although we will most likely get Cat 1 possibly Cat 2 winds here. Last I heard the storm had been down graded to a Cat 3. My biggest concern was the storm surge and while its still a danger, IMO, it is not the same threat that it was 48 hours ago..... currently. I know better than to turn my back on her. I am evaluating the situation moment by moment.

Now when you take the above info and then add evacuating would have put us in the mess that most of yall are seeing on TV..... no way! As Yo indicated in his post it's unbelieveable and crazy trying to get out. No gas availability also was a concern. I've heard of many people sleeping on the freeway last night while I slept in my comfortable bed. It was really a no brainer to me. My kids and grandkids left Wednesday and made it to Dallas fairly easily but that was because they left early Wed. There's another thing here that most people are forgetting. Everyone that left, will be coming back. Prepare for another freeway log jam come Sunday.
