Anyone out there a fan of fantasy novels? If so, check out "The Wheel Of Time" series by Robert Jordan published by TOR. There are 10 books so far in the series, a Pre-lude, and a companion book that has a lot of artwork and "history" about the series. His books are long, between 500-700 pages, and the chapters take about 45 minutes to an hour to read. This series comes highly recommended.

I will second that. Very big fan of the wheel of time series. What I want to know is how much longer Robert Jordan is going to make us wait for the next one. I've read the whole series about 4 times and getting ready to start it again. Very good. I would also reccomend the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. It is about 9 books long each book is about 500 - 700 pages in length and worth every page. Wow so cool that someone else on these boards is a Jordan reader right on.

Is this the same category that Neil Gaiman falls under? His books are not quite as long, but they are quite enjoyable. I just picked up "Smoke and Mirrors" which is a short story collection and am looking forward to reading it, once I finish "Hayduke Lives" by Ed Abbey.

I read a different series by Goodkind. Maybe the Renshai series? Now I have to go back and look.

I bought the companion guide yesterday and am half way through it. It is so-so, but it does answer some questions and really make you think of other questions. Read the companion guide, then go back and re-read the series. I have the pro-logue on order from B&N, should be here next week. Can't wait.

Some of the best books I've read in the genre until about book 7 where it all went wrong. Jordan decided to milk the series for all it's worth. It was originally to be a trilogy, then a double trilogy, then a triple trilogy.....you get the picture. My guess is he'll never finish the series. That kind of pisses me off so I quit after volume 8 :(

When he kicks off I might finish them just to see if anything actually happens in the last few books

The companion is cool bought it when it first came out the only problem is they need to make a new one it came out pretty early in the series and doesn't cover the newer books. The prologue is pretty cool gives a lot of insight on Moiraine and what her mission truly was. I enjoyed it. I think I read somewhere that there is going to be 1 or 2 more prologue's too come out after he has finished the main series just wish he would get on it and finish it already.

I have to agree with Lucasbuck, the books were fantastic until around book 7. I am still slowly working my way through them, though they are a hard read. I love the basic story line and Jordan can weave one hell of a tale. I also agree with those that have recommended them...one of the best in the genre.

BTW, the Goodkind books are the Sword of Truth books. They are excellent with some of the best character development that I have ever seen. I have not read the new book, Chainfire, but the overall premise of it disturbs me. We'll see how it is soon.

Just finished Chainfire it is disturbing and if you are a true fan of richard and khalan it will piss you off my book flew across the room a couple times while I was reading it but it is a good book and leaves the way for the next book to be quite interesting and maybe the final 0ne Happy reading

Have read up to the 8th book. Since having kids I fine it hard to have the time to read? Go figure.

wheel of time series got tiresome at about book 5 or 6(lord of chaos was the last one i read)...too much politics/women backstabbing each other...too much talk and not enough action by book 5 or so.

wizards first rule was tg's best...series went downhill fast after the first book although i did read 4 i think.

for unparalleled sci fi...i look forward to everything robert sawyer writes.

derrek :D

I stopped reading these after the third book..kinda gave up on fantasy in general..reading alot of michael slade and Douglass clegg now...as well as Jack Ketchum
