Rocky Patel Factory Select Torpedo (SG)
Country: Honduras
Length/Ring: 6 1/4 x 52
Shape: Torpedo

Ah the old bundled cigar left so alone in the field of super premiums. These cigars are marketed as having minor flaws, such as a slightly torn or discolored wrapper, basically superficial stuff that in no way affects the taste or the draw of the cigar.

First Impression
I wasn’t expecting much from this SG. The price I paid for them was essentially a steal, $1.75 a stick. The actual construction is pretty spot on. I looked over the bundle and only found a few with torn wrappers and none of them were discolored in anyway.

Light
The smell from this unbanded SG was unbelievable. My nose picked up dense tobacco and a raw spice when I sniffed the foot. The cut was a little problematic because of a tear in the wrapper near the cap, but this was resolved quickly with my Xi cutter. I toasted the foot for a good twenty seconds before I finally began to light and draw on the cigar. The burn was beautiful and the draw smooth throughout the smoke.

The Smoke
The raw spice which I smelled during my prelight inspection of the cigar was muted during the first inch of the smoke and was dominated by a light woody flavor that left a very short but pleasant finish. I sat down to prepare for a one dimensional taste from this cigar and quietly puffed away.

Around twenty minutes into the cigar a subtle change began and the smoke became heavier and more substantial with flavors that moved away from the one dimensional and into the complex side. The smoke now contained a nice hickory character that thinly veiled some thick notes of spice that were marked with a slight taste of pepper with overtones of a very satisfying tobacco taste. The spice and pepper notes increased on the finish and this rich pattern of complex flavor continued as I nubbed the cigar and finally let it rest and die in my glass ash tray.

Overall
This SG was a pleasant surprise that I really wasn’t expecting to find from a cigar that cost me less than $2. This cigar is marked with all the flavors that one expects to find when they smoke a nice SG. With its beautiful taste, quality, and price, this is sure to become my new everyday smoke.

I received a bundle of petite coronas with my last order for free. Great price great bundled smoke. Thanks for the review.

Nice review! Sounds yummy!

I've had a couple of these and they have all been nothing but pepper, pepper, pepper. I couldn't really take it, so they were all tossed fairly early. All of my other smokes are doing just fine, so I don't think it's a storage thing unless these enjoy a little higher than 65%.

I usually like SGs OK, so this was a surprise.

Does anyone else find these exceptionally spicy?

Yes spicey when smoked young,I always sit these for at least 6 months. The stregnth stays but mellow off to a sweet delight.I have purchased 8 bundles of the toro and 8 bundles of the PC.Great cigar and to mention, the 2nds for a tad less then the factory selects are just as good from the same source.
Only the pc's have had a couple that were plugged, other than that, who cares about wrapper discoloring if it smokes/tastes fine.

Well...maybe I need to grab some more and let them sit for awhile. All of the ones I have had were only a month or so post shipment.

Thanks for the advice and info.

These have turned into one of my go-tos. I keep the Torps and Petite Coronas on hand. The Toros are great, too. The Seconds(not the Selects) are supposed to be the same with more flaws but I found them to be different. It could have been the one bundle, though.

Thanks for the pic review! Those La Glorias look mighty tasty ;)
