Went to the dentist today due to a solid tooth ach. Find out that I need a root canal on a Tooth that had a root canal 5 years ago.
On top of that Doc says until the infection goes down I need to stay away from Cigars.

That sucks. I'm afraid to go to the dentist!

Dude, I'm in the *exact* same position. Went in for a normal dental visit, had x-rays and they say that a root canal I had a few years back needs another go at it. "Didn't get it all."

I notice cigar smoking seems to agitate it a bit , but can't figure out why?

Just hope it's not cracked now. They tried the root canal 3 times on the same tooth for me - all within 1 1/2 years. Ended up just getting it pulled anyway. Find a good oral surgeon. Just one pull with the pliers and all is fixed!

If you get it pulled... you'll have a hole in your teeth.
And, depending on your insurance, they won't even cover a bridge.

I hate having this hole in my teeth.

I've gotten used to the holes in my teeth. I have "soft" teeth according to my dentist so I have a plethora of problems.

I don't even know my dentist's name.

I'm going to be in big trouble.

The, "root canal" part, I understand ( I think) But the, "stay away from Cigars".......time to find a Cigar friendly dentist....

Haha. It's the "sucking" part that most dentists worry about. It can mess up the stitches and things will come undone, not to mention, it won't clot properly if you keep sucking. It's best to do this in the winter when you're smoking less (at least I am cause of the weather) compared to later.

I have to get a root canal on a crown... dentist just drilled a hole right through the back of my left central crown to let the pressure release..

The "sucking" action doesn't have any bearing on a root canal as there aren't any stitches. That's usually reserved for having a tooth pulled or removed surgically. I'm not sure why he'd suggest staying away from cigars(maybe it has to do with the temporary sealant used). Non-smoker I suppose..

Hmm.
I thought I had to get stitches. I think I'm confusing wisdom teeth removal with tooth pulled and root canal. I know I had to get stitches for my wisdom teeth removal.

"Do not smoke during the first 24 hours and minimize the number of times you smoke during the remaining healing process because smoking delays the healing process. "

Now that I understand. I think it probably has to do with the lack of oxygen to cells as well as what smoke does to blood cells in general. Still a fun habit.

Thanks for the replies,

His reason for not smoking was the infection could be seen on the side of the gums and he felt it would help the infection grow. I have an appointment on Thursday this week for the Root canal Doc says I have a 80% chance to save the tooth and if not he is going to pull it.

This has taught me one major thing. I hate the dentist but I must get back to seeing him at least once a year.

I can't remember if the specialist I saw said that nicotine acts like a blood thinner in the gums so its harder to clot. I do remember hims saying smoking cigars will irritate the gums and cause problems healing. But this is a extremely minor fix to what I had done.
