I've never really looked into it, but I know generally it's some techie thing to do with newsfeeds on websites..don't really know what it does for us though. Rod, explain!

What's the prize?

RASS - rolling around on my ass singing a song.

Did I win?

I thought more of you would know. :whistling:

Let's say you use Yahoo Mail, and when you log into Yahoo Mail, you want to see the new threads from CP. Simply copy/paste the link into your Yahoo Mail RSS Receiver, and the new threads will be ported over to Yahoo Mail for you, without the need of logging into the forum. Let's say you want to monitor new cigar passes, RSS is a great way of doing that.

If what I just said makes no sense at all, go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS_(protocol)

you can also get an add on extension for the firefox browser, actually i think it is built in, and put the RSS feed into a tab for easier viewing. this is a great feature as you can scan new post headers without actually logging into a page to see if there are new posts.
thanks for this Rod, flippin' sweet!
here are the instructions off the firefox page:
"For those who are new to Live Bookmarks or RSS Feeds:

There are two ways to add a Live Bookmark in Firefox:

1. If the page you are looking at in your browser offers an RSS feed ( http://digg.com/ , for example), there will be a small orange icon on the right side of the address bar. If you click on that, it will open the "Add Live Bookmark" dialog.

2. In the Bookmarks Manager, (found under Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks), there is an option under the File menu for "New Live Bookmark." Here you can put the location of the XML feed in the Location field.

After doing either of these steps, restarting Firefox or choosing "Refresh Feeds" from the Ticker's context menu will show the feed in the ticker."

you can also d/l this RSS ticker and it runs at the bottom of your browser like the tickers on CNN here is the link:
RSS Ticker
edit to add info and linkify the ticker

Cool, very good feature to have if ya absolutely need to monitor the forums for new threads/replies.
I have been useing RSS for years for various news sites.

Does anyone know any cigar related info/news sites that uses RSS?

Thank you.

Which link?

Do you have an example?

thanks.

Scroll all the way down to the very bottom of the forum, and on the bottom/left side, you'll see an orange icon; click it.

It fires off a menu that goes...down...not visisble in the window!

LOL.

You have to size the window to get it.

Thanks.

Maybe one of you guys can help me. I'm using AOL as my homepage and I can't get the RSS to work. I'm trying to figure out if it's a typical FU AOL thing or I'm doing something wrong. This is what I'm trying to add...this feed....

This is AOL's setup section...

Add your favorite RSS or blog feeds:
Add to Page...WITH THE COPY & PASTE BOX HERE
* Feeds allow you to see the latest updates from your favorite sites or blogs
* To locate the feed URL, look for an orange feed button or the words "Feeds" or "RSS"
* Then cut and past the URL above, click "Add to Page" and you're done!

I'm copying & pasting the url to AOL as: http://www.cigarpass.com/forumsipb/index.php?showtopic=47324

...and all it keeps telling me is:

Oops! We are unable to load your feed. Please check your URL and try again!

I've tried taking removing the http...the http://...

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Don't know a thing about AOL and what they are doing with RSS feeds. However, I think your problem may be that you are trying to add a specific topic to the RSS feed. To the best of my knowledge that is not possible. You must add the entire sub-forum as Rod has defined them and as they as provided when you click the link at the bottom of forum pages. So if you want to monitor that subject for example, you'd need to subscribe to the Passes in Progress RSS feed.
Specifically:

http://www.cigarpass.com/forums/index.php?...rssout&id=3

Good luck with AOL.

Tried that and it didn't work either.

AOL said that if Rod uses some sort of software that would be recognized by the AOL browser (RSS reader) and then all an AOL user would have to do is click on the RSS logo within the address line to subscribe to it.

I dunno...it's all Greek to me!

Interesting, or if AOL utilized the RSS OPML specification as recognized by all the other RSS aggregators, like Yahoo, Google, and 20 different free RSS aggregator programs out there, all the AOL users wouldn't have a problem. Understand that RSS feeds are not exclusive to a browser. OUTLOOK & Thunderbird email programs have the ability to handle RSS feeds. Additionally, there are numerous free programs available to handle RSS feeds exculsively. RSS Bandit is my favorite. It is also a feature in Firefox, my personal perference for browsing. AOL doesn't still require you to use their browser do they?

Well good luck with AOL.
